How much crop production can your soil support with the nutrients already present in it?

Bob Tillman's soil has enough potassium for 600 YEARS of production, and enough iron for 7 MILLION years. Bob used total nutrient digestion testing to discover the mineral reserves of his soil. And he's using biology to unlock it.

Bob founded Alta Colina Vineyard & Winery in 2003 in the steep terrain of Paso Robles, CA. He has spent two decades transitioning away from conventional methods to a biological approach centered on the natural resilience of his native ecosystem.

Today on the podcast, Bob and John Kempf discuss:
➡️ Transitioning to complete no-till after observing that native grasses were more effective than planted cover crops.
➡️ Using compost extracts and teas to inject biological activity directly into the soil through the irrigation system.
➡️ Providing ground cover with high-density native plant populations to support deep-rooted vines while maintaining high soil organic matter.
➡️ Using AEA and sap analysis to identify specific micronutrient deficiencies and adjust nutrition throughout the growing season through foliar applications.
➡️ Applying AEA products like CalGuard and Rebound Boron to address seasonal trending deficiencies in calcium and boron levels .

The daughters dog approves of the start of our personal fresh flower journey. The weeds are putting up a fight now after we went from a D4 drought to rain and drizzle for 2 weeks, but we are learning as we also teach a new grower why certain things arent working such as over grown transplants. Good news is the flowers are sizing up and Pinion from Advancing Eco Agriculture has kept the plants clean!

Still trying to pencil out your fertilizer this year? Lets talk. Email your full soil samples to me at [email protected] and let's schedule a time to visit after I build out your fertility reserves analysis so we can access what you already own. Lets harness the power together of what the agronomy work of John Kempf and Advancing Eco Agriculture can do. Lets take it beyond the conference or podcast and put a plan into action on your farm.

Its time to talk war. Yes that war in Iran. Fertilizer prices and fuel prices are spiking so what is the silver lining?

There is nothing we can control in a global market other than what happens on our farms. Those of you who work with me know that I preach healthy soils and moving away from conventional soluble fertilizer of all types. With tight budgets, its not too late to have a discussion on how to do these things in season, starting at planting.

What i dont hear being discussed is the marketing opportunities this war should bring. Let's be honest, most farms do not grow food, they grow fuel and industrial products. Here is the elephant in the room....when do the ethanol companies start to follow suit with energy prices from dinosaur 🦕 residue? Ethanol prices should be soaring. Are you hearing this anywhere?

Its time to demand energy companies pay what ethanol is worth in this market and become a solution to farm profits. How do we as an industry make this happen?

Oh, and in case youre wondering, higher nutrient density in the grain, something we are used to seeing at Advancing Eco Agriculture, yields higher ethanol at the plant. All plants know this, only a few pay the farmer.

John Kempf 2-day intensive workshop in California!

Dive deep into the science of regeneration with John and other AEA experts at Burroughs Family Farms.

April 7-8.

We’ll show you how to manage nutrition and the microbiome to:
➡️ Prevent and control disease
➡️ Reduce insect pressure
➡️ Improve quality and yield of nuts and fruits
➡️ Improve soil health
➡️ Increase farm profitability

We’ll go beyond the basics into topics like nitrogen processing, carbon sinks, rhizophagy, redox, calcium management, and more. We’ll make these subjects actionable and give you the tools to implement them on your farm.

This workshop will be targeted towards perennial crop growers who want to level up their regenerative knowledge and go home with the skills to supercharge their orchards, vineyards, and farms.

The days will consist of classroom discussions of complex topics in the morning with field tours showing practical implementation in the afternoon.
