“WHAT did YOU do today?” 😂

This text came in from a member of our team with a full Maleficent costume—staff, horns, the whole thing—and honestly she looked pretty Maleficent, but also kind of magnificent at the same time.

But here’s what actually matters—

Our client wasn’t dressing up just to dress up. She was getting ready to go volunteer. That’s something she’s always cared about, and she wasn’t missing it.

And our team member didn’t treat this like “helping her get dressed.”

She took the time to figure it out, made the costume work, and made sure our client could walk into that event feeling like herself—not sidelined, not sitting it out.

And you can feel it in that text—she’s proud of it. She had fun with it. She wanted to share it.

That’s the part people don’t always see.

It’s not just that someone gets the support they need to show up for what matters to them—
it’s that the person supporting them actually cares enough to make it a good experience, not just a completed task.

That’s where the ripple effect is.

That’s the difference between getting through the day…
and actually getting to keep living your life.

April is Occupational Therapy Month—and it’s at the core of how we approach care.

At Gares Senior Concierge, we don’t just help complete tasks—we look at what’s changing underneath them.

A missed step.
A hesitation.
A routine that’s no longer as simple as it used to be.

Occupational therapy helps identify those shifts early—and more importantly, guides what to do next.

That perspective shapes how we support our clients—practically, thoughtfully, and in ways that truly make daily life easier.

That’s the OT difference.

Hidden Bergen County: The Quiet Places That Still Matter

Most people think “getting out” has to mean something big—
a crowded park, a long day, or an exhausting plan.

It doesn’t.

Across northern Bergen County, there are small, overlooked places that offer something better:
a chance to step out, reset, and enjoy something simple—without the stress.

These are the places most people pass by.

A Few Worth Knowing

* In Bergenfield, a quiet loop around Cooper’s Pond offers benches, water views, and just enough movement to feel good without overdoing it.
* In Glen Rock, the Glen Rock Arboretum provides a peaceful, contained setting that’s ideal for a short walk and a moment to slow down.
* In Park Ridge, the Wortendyke Barn combines history with open space—an easy way to add a sense of purpose to a simple outing.
* In River Edge, New Bridge Landing offers short, flexible walking paths with places to sit, pause, and take it in.

Why These Places Work

It’s not about the location—it’s about how it feels.

The right setting:

* isn’t overwhelming
* doesn’t require a long commitment
* allows for rest without interruption
* gives just enough to engage without draining energy

Sometimes that’s a short walk.
Sometimes it’s sitting by the water.
Sometimes it’s just getting out the door.

What We See Every Day

We’ve learned that meaningful moments don’t come from big plans.

They come from:

* a short walk that feels manageable
* a place that feels familiar and calm
* the ability to leave before it becomes too much

That’s where these places matter.

If Getting Out Has Started to Feel Like Too Much

You’re not alone.

And it doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

Sometimes the right place—and the right support—makes all the difference.

Louise & Patches: Keeping What Matters Most

Louise lives in an independent living apartment within a larger senior community. After losing her husband over a year ago, she made the move there—but one constant has remained: her cat, Patches. For 14 years, Patches has been a steady, comforting presence and an important part of her family.

Recently, things became complicated.

After a period of increased visitors and changes in the apartment, Patches—who is naturally very skittish—began having accidents outside the litter box. Louise’s daughter returned from vacation to an urgent call from the community, worried that Louise might not be able to keep her cat if the issue continued.

She called us late on a Friday.

The next day, we were there.

We met with Louise, talked through what had been happening, and looked at the full picture—Patches’ behavior, environmental changes, feeding routines, and Louise’s own physical challenges. Louise has significant arthritis and uses a rollator, which made tasks like opening cat food cans and managing daily pet care more difficult.

This wasn’t just a “cat problem.” It was a systems problem.

We built a plan focused on keeping both Louise and Patches stable:

* Coordinated a veterinary visit to rule out medical causes
* Increased litter box maintenance to daily cleaning, with scheduled full changes and sanitation
* Set up close monitoring over the next 1–2 weeks with updates to the family and community management
* Recommended deep carpet cleaning and environmental reset
* Added hands-on support: helping with food prep, opening cans, storing food accessibly, and maintaining a consistent routine

The goal was simple: Louise keeps Patches.

Because sometimes independence isn’t about doing everything yourself—it’s about having the right support to keep the life you care about intact.

Today we sat down with a family to begin navigating one of the harder transitions they’ve faced.

Their mother recently entered hospice, and now comes the overwhelming task of preparing her home—sorting through belongings, making necessary repairs, and getting it ready for sale.

We walked through the house together, talking through what needs to happen and helping turn a long, emotional to-do list into a clear, manageable plan.

We also brought in one of our trusted real estate partners to tour the home and review comps, so the family has a realistic understanding of next steps and timing.

At the same time, we began coordinating the behind-the-scenes work that often gets overlooked—connecting them with trusted partners for things like mold remediation, ventilation improvements, and other essential maintenance needed before listing.

Over the coming week, we’ll continue coordinating estimates, beginning the cleanout process, and moving things forward piece by piece.

It’s never just about the house. It’s about helping families move through a difficult moment with support, structure, and a plan.

💜

This week at Gares Senior Concierge looked like this…

Not all of our passengers are human.
This week included a cat—with opinions—headed to the vet, safely escorted alongside her owner.

Tax season showed up too.
Not just forms and deadlines, but making sure everything got where it needed to go—and back—without becoming overwhelming.

A medical appointment where a daughter had to step out…
and the quiet reassurance that her father wouldn’t have to go through it alone. We stayed, saw it through, and got him home safely.

And boxes. Lots of them.
A new assisted living apartment, slowly coming together—clothes put away, familiar items placed just right, and someone there for the part no one talks about—the emotional weight of it all.

This is the work.
It doesn’t always look big, but it always matters.

Moments That Matter 💜

What started as a simple request to declutter hundreds of books became something much more meaningful.

When we first met Martine, her goal was practical—organizing her home as her vision declined due to macular degeneration. But it didn’t take long to see that the books weren’t just clutter. They represented a lifetime of curiosity, learning, and discovery.

Martine has always been someone who does. She loved to cook, to garden, to learn—and she’s passed that love of learning, cooking, and creating on to her five children and grandchildren.

As her vision changed, the way she engages with those passions had to change too.

Over time, our visits evolved.

We introduced adaptive tools—like a reading pen that brings written words to life—so she could continue engaging with the material she loves. We worked together to improve accessibility on her computer, helping her stay connected and independent in the ways that matter most to her.

Some days, we accompany her to lectures so she can continue learning in the community.

Other days, the most meaningful moments happen right at her kitchen table—where conversation flows easily, and stories unfold.

Martine is a lifelong learner. In addition to earning multiple master’s degrees, she taught herself genealogy and studied anthropology to deepen her ability to trace her family’s lineage—work she pursued with remarkable depth and dedication.

And even as her vision changes, that curiosity hasn’t gone anywhere.

It’s simply found new ways to continue.

Because sometimes, what starts as “help around the house” becomes something far more impactful—supporting someone in continuing to live the life that defines them.
