❄️ Cold Weather Prevention Tips ❄️
From your favorite Trophy Club plumber

With cold weather expected this weekend, we recommend taking the following steps to help prevent frozen pipes and costly plumbing repairs:

Outdoor Tips
• Cover all outdoor faucets with insulated faucet covers
• Remove all hoses, including those connected to pool fillers or irrigation systems

Indoor Tips
• Allow faucets located on exterior walls to drip slightly if possible
• Drip both hot and cold sides to keep water moving through the pipes

If Power Is Lost
• Increase water flow through faucets to help prevent pipes from freezing
• If you have a tankless water heater and the power goes out:
• Immediately unplug the unit or turn off the breaker
• Open a hot water faucet and increase flow to keep water moving through the unit
• Once power is restored, simply plug the unit back in or flip the breaker back on

Taking these simple precautions can save you thousands of dollars in potential plumbing repairs.

Stay safe, stay warm, and don’t hesitate to call if you need help.

Steps to Keep Pipes and Faucets from Freezing
1. Insulate Exposed Pipes:
• Use foam pipe insulation or wrap pipes in heat tape, especially in unheated areas like basements, crawl spaces, and garages.
2. Seal Drafts:
• Check for drafts around windows, doors, and pipe openings. Use caulk or insulation to seal these areas.
3. Open Cabinet Doors:
• In areas like kitchens and bathrooms, open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around pipes.
4. Let Faucets Drip:
• Allow a slow, steady drip from faucets connected to exposed pipes. Moving water is less likely to freeze.
5. Keep the Heat On:
• Maintain a consistent temperature in your home, even if you’re away. Set the thermostat no lower than 55°F (13°C).
6. Disconnect and Drain Outdoor Hoses:
• Remove garden hoses, and shut off and drain outdoor spigots. Use faucet covers for added protection.

Steps to Prevent Tankless Water Heaters from Freezing
1. Install a Recirculation System (if possible):
• A recirculation pump keeps water moving through the system, preventing freezing.
2. Use Built-In Freeze Protection:
• Most tankless units come with built-in freeze protection (electric heating elements). Ensure the unit is plugged in and has power.
3. Insulate the Unit and Pipes:
• Apply insulation to the unit and exposed water lines leading to and from the heater. Use pipe insulation or heat tape.
4. Leave a Drip Running:
• On the hottest setting, let a faucet drip to keep warm water flowing through the heater.
5. Shut Off and Drain If Necessary:
• In extreme cases or prolonged power outages:
• Turn off the water supply and gas supply.
• Open the purge valve drains to release water from the system.
• Use compressed air to blow out any remaining water if you expect a hard freeze.
6. Protect the Exterior Unit (if applicable):
• For outdoor tankless units, consider installing an enclosure or cover to shield them from direct wind and freezing temperatures.

With the cold weather about to come in on Sunday . We would recommend that you make sure all your outdoor faucets are covered and hoses removed even if it’s to a pool filler . Also on the inside I would drip any faucets that our against an outside wall if possible. If some reason power is lost just increase the flow of water thru the fixtures to keep water lines from freezing up. This includes both hot and cold side . If you have a tankless water heater and power goes out immediately go unplug power to it and increase water flow on hot side to keep the unit from freezing up . When power returns just go plug unit back in or flip breaker back on . These simple tips could save you lots of money in plumbing repairs.

Everyone stay safe and warm and give us a call anytime if you have problems.

Thank you ,

Probably one of the top three in my career that we did today and had to go swimming in a hole under house to make repair on a water line but it’s done and took 3 people to pull me out of hole ( I got stuck coming out of hole ) !! We had to dig 4ft under house to leak .

Fun Friday. Trying to dig a tunnel in the rain under house to get to a 1/2 copper line to cap off due to a slab leak !!
