Step into the whimsical world of Jori Jori . ✨

Our second Transforming Trash Artist-in-Residence has spent August turning discarded textiles, found objects, and unexpected odds and ends into a colorful world of soft sculpture, mythology, humor, and storytelling.

Jori’s work asks us to look a little differently at the things we leave behind. What stories do our objects carry? What happens when something discarded is given a new identity? And just how strange and wonderful can our waste become in the hands of an artist?

Come experience Jori’s world and see what they’ve created during their month in Rochester.

What can the hands of those who came before us teach us about waste? 🧵🪡

For generations, women mended, quilted, patched, saved scraps, and found new purposes for what remained. Artist-in-Residence Jori Jori draws on this history of textile arts and resourcefulness in “How it came to pass”, a monumental soft sculpture named Grandmother, inspired by the traditional yo-yo doll and created from discarded textiles.

More than 100 hours of sewing, embroidery, and assemblage went into the work, connecting historical traditions of handwork with a contemporary conversation about textile waste and creative reuse.

Grandmother is an homage to the ingenuity of the women who came before us, but she also asks us to consider what we might learn from them today.

Come sit awhile with Grandmother, a god of reuse, a saint of hand work. See Grandmother at the Transforming Trash Artist-in-Residence Exhibition:

Over 100 hours of prepping, disassembling, and hand sewing will go into the new sculpture by Jori Jori to be unveiled on August 28th at the Olmsted County Government Rotunda.

In the U.S. alone approximately 11.3 million tons of textiles end up in our landfills on a yearly basis, that’s 65%-85% that are produced in the same year. Creative reuse is one of many ways we can help divert these materials and give them new life!

Come visit the newest Transforming Trash Artist-in-Residence, Jori Jori, specializing in textile reuse. Reception is 4-7pm, artist talk at 5:30pm. Link in bio .
