2026 Track #1 is done in WY, will be pondered for some time and ended with the hunter deciding to call the track with blood evidence still be found.
After a talk at 3.2 miles from hit site after the bull took us up over the mountain top with 1100’ of elevation gain then started back down hitting a BLM road and following it for 1/2 mile then starting a long descent through sagebrush out thought was this bull was just zippered open and no stomach or intestines were cut. Caul fat in massive quantities with no smell was found clinging to deadfall that he jumped or on ground after jumps. A bloody bed was found at 2 miles but he just kept going.
Picabo showed me great tracking but the ultimate reward wasn’t there to end it.
Great long day being gone just under 11 hours. Hundreds of antelope seen. 5 bull elk in the dirt road having me hit the brakes on the way out of track and 2 big muleys running in front of me on highway.
3 calls today for the elk we went on and a bear and mule deer that I could not commit to and other trackers picked up.
Beat tired , wondering will I get that call on the morning and as Toby Keith sings
“ Now my body says "You can't do this boy"
But my pride says "Oh yes, you can".

Ketchum: He said I was the number 1 tracker this year and he took Picabo. That’s 2 years in a row!

Human mom: Sorry buddy.

Challis: Quit complaining. At least you’re an option. Hey! Let’s go chew on something.

2026 track season is upon us again.
We will be based out of the Hayden/Craig Colorado area for the next 14 days starting tomorrow. After that ? This area will have us located to help in parts of CO/WY & possibly ID/UT if no other Rocky Mountain Big Game Recovery tracking teams can’t help. Picabo, Ketchum are acting like they know it’s time. Challis is her typical always happy.
Today we spent the morning exploring Rocky Mountain National Park and as always it didn’t disappoint !

Oh the drive on this one never stops. A early morning beach walk with the dogs has Picabo finding her favorite scent. Had me laughing as she stopped and started following the mule deer tracks.
Only 40 days until opening day !

Fun training session helping new tracker Ben and Tucker prepare for a test today. Ketchum also ran the storm crushed 27 hour line laid day before and not run. He worked out a couple of major struggle points cutting a corner where it appeared the scent just disappeared.
Looking forward to a weekend training session with Renee and Ella as she prepares to be challenged with a UBT 3 this August at the Michigan event in Grayling.

I guess I should have checked the radar before putting out a training track for a new area tracker that’s getting ready for a started dog test.
Oh well, there’s a nice line and hide out to run tomorrow after a good thunderstorm and hot weather for tomorrow around the 26-28 hour mark. I’m thinking Ketchum right now.
Also will be putting out a new 3 hour old training line too.

Summer weather HEAT training has started to prepare for September out West tracking. This has been something we’ve done regularly each year by running our lines in the hottest, driest part of the day. Not waiting for dewpoint to increase.
Tonight Challis struggled and could not complete the 21 hour 452 yard line. She got to about 120 yards very sloppily and I decided to pull her.
An hour later I put Ketchum at the start and he worked very slowly getting through Challis’s back and forth searching holding the line. Ketchum did complete and find the hide after 2 areas of struggle doing many circles and checks.
This track was put out with 1/2 oz. of blood diluted with about 1 oz. of water. The hooves used had been used on 3 previous tracks.
