Thanksgiving
What in the world do I have to be thankful for? You may be thinking or facing the following. The entire world seems to be at war; who knows where the next terrorist attack will be; there will be no such thing as retirement when I get to that age; I just lost my job; I have no idea how I’ll afford to get anyone anything for Christmas; my loved one has just left me; my children are in rebellion and addicted to alcohol or drugs; I got caught and now I’m paying the price; the President I wanted didn’t get elected. The list goes on and on of reasons why we aren’t thankful and have a chip on our shoulder, after all this world owes us something – doesn’t it?
If you can hear someone’s voice as they are talking to you there are two things you should be thankful for – you’ve been given another day of life and you can hear.
Many people thought they would be here today but yesterday was their last day of life. Natural disasters, wars, terrorism, car wrecks, diseases, domestic violence, starvation and many other things took their lives. On average close to 200,000 people die each day.
If you are reading this you should be thankful for three things – you’re alive, you have sight and you’ve learned to read. There are over 2 billion people who can’t read. If you can read and choose not to, you have no advantage over those who can’t.
If you’ve eaten a meal today you should be thankful you won’t be one of the millions of people today that will suffer from starvation.
If you are inside protected from the elements you should be thankful you aren’t one of the millions who are homeless.
If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes to wear, a roof over your head and a place to sleep you are richer than 75% of the world.
If you have money in the bank, in your wallet or spare change sitting in a dish somewhere you should be thankful – you are among the top 8% of the worlds wealthy.
If you can attend church without fear of harassment, arrest, torture or death you are more blessed than 3 billion people who don’t enjoy religious freedom.
If you’ve accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior you can be thankful you’ll be spending eternity in Heaven. If you haven’t accepted Jesus and the free gift of salvation yet you can be thankful that you have one more opportunity to do so today. Please don’t wait until tomorrow, many people that are alive today will never see tomorrow’s sunrise.
Remember – thanksgiving is not a one-day-of-the-year event. It’s a mindset. It’s a lifestyle. It’s waking up each day being thankful for what you actually have. If we knew what we truly possessed and wasn’t always daydreaming about something else…..we would truly be thankful!
Happy Thanksgiving!
