SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT!

On Thursday and Friday, visionary child- and family-serving systems professionals, faith leaders, and community advocates will gather in Round Rock, Texas for the Building Bridges, Removing Barriers summit. Over two days, we will unite in purpose to channel our collective wisdom toward improving outcomes for ALL children, youth, and families, particularly those disproportionately impacted by systemic inequities.

Today, we spotlight Mr. Mike Mitchell, Lead Researcher at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in Washington, D.C. Mr. Mitchell's work centers on state fiscal policy, its intersection with the criminal legal system, and the impact of state financial decisions on racial equity.

Mr. Mitchell previously spent nearly eight years with the Center, where he held the position of Senior Policy Analyst on the State Fiscal Policy team. In that role, he focused on issues related to higher education and youth justice reform.

In his keynote address, Mr. Mitchell will tell us everything we need to know about the "Big Beautiful Bill." He will explore how significant changes to Medicaid and SNAP will impact families and how these policy changes will reshape the state fiscal landscape in the years ahead. Attendees will also gain insights into other emerging policy challenges that could define 2026. The goal is to equip state policymakers, advocates, and analysts with the context and tools needed to navigate a rapidly evolving fiscal environment.

We are grateful for this important and timely insight! If you're registered, we will see you later this week!

SUMMIT SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT!

On December 11th & 12th, visionary child- and family-serving systems professionals, faith leaders, and community advocates will gather in Round Rock, Texas for the Building Bridges, Removing Barriers summit. Over two days, we will unite in purpose to channel our collective wisdom toward improving outcomes for Black children, youth, and families still disproportionately impacted by systemic inequities.

Today, we spotlight Ms. Sandra Gasca. As vice president of the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s Center for Systems Innovation, Ms. Gasca oversees national and state reform efforts in three key areas: child welfare, young people transitioning into adulthood and juvenile justice.

Prior to assuming this role in 2018, Gasca served as the director of the Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative®, which aims to equip young people leaving foster care with the relationships, resources and opportunities needed to achieve well-being and success as they transition into adulthood. Gasca joined the Foundation in 2015. She previously worked at KVC Health Systems, a national leader in behavioral health care, child welfare, and community health and wellness. As the nonprofit’s executive vice president of practice and leadership integration, Ms. Gasca led efforts to transform child welfare systems with results-based decision making and clinical best practices.

We are honored to have this changemaker participate in our upcoming summit.

See you in December!

This beautiful soul, Miss. Toia Potts, will speak on an important panel on Day 1 of our upcoming Building Bridges, Removing Barriers summit. She is a grieving mother in North Carolina who was falsely accused of child abuse. She spent more than eight months in the Durham County Jail on an unattainable bond, resulting in the loss of her employment, housing, vehicle, personal belongings, and custody of her children. Following the reform of the Durham bond schedule in 2019, Ms. Potts was released from custody and later fully exonerated, with all charges dismissed. Despite this, her parental rights were terminated in 2022.

The theme of this year's summit center's around Dr. Martin Luther King's idea of the "Beloved Community." Here, Miss. Potts describes what justice in a beloved community looks and feels like to her.

SUMMIT SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT!

In less than a month, visionary child- and family-serving systems professionals, faith leaders, and community advocates will gather in Round Rock, Texas for the Building Bridges, Removing Barriers summit. Over two days, we will unite in purpose to channel our collective wisdom toward improving outcomes for Black children, youth, and families still disproportionately impacted by systemic inequities.

Starting this week, we will begin introducing you to some of the truly remarkable individuals who will take part in our panel discussions.

Meet Toia Potts, a grieving mother and dedicated activist based in Durham, North Carolina. After being falsely accused of child abuse, she spent more than eight months in the Durham County Jail on an unattainable bond, resulting in the loss of her employment, housing, vehicle, personal belongings, and custody of her children. Following the reform of the Durham bond schedule in 2019, Ms. Potts was released from custody and later fully exonerated, with all charges dismissed. Despite this, her parental rights were terminated in 2022.

Joining Miss Potts during a particularly poignant session will be Dr. Jessica Pryce, a Florida State University research faculty member who has worked on the frontlines of child welfare, conducted primary research, worked on policy with Florida’s legislature, and taught graduate level courses in child welfare. In her book "Broken: Transforming Child Protective Services – Notes of a Former Caseworker," Dr. Pryce profiles Miss Potts and her lawyer, Elizabeth Simpson, breaking down the child welfare system from the inside out, sharing her professional journey, and offering the crucial perspectives of caseworkers and Black women impacted by the system.

The two will discuss Miss Potts' personal story, offering insider perspectives on how current systems continue to fail children, families, and communities.

We are honored to have these changemakers participate in our upcoming summit.

See you in December!
