What daily actions do you take to improve your team culture at work? 🤷‍♀️

A year and a half ago, I jumped into a brand new job. I found myself surrounded by a team culture that was one bad day away from a toxic work environment. I felt powerless to make an impact. As I got to know people better, I learned that nearly all of them wanted to change the dominant culture, but had no idea how to begin.

This is where I stepped up to the plate. I talked with the head of my department and asked her to take a leap of faith and trust me to run a workshop series to improve our culture.

She took that leap, and our team engaged in a 10-session workshop series that transformed the way we envision our team culture moving forward. This team dove into a process of healing that is now reinforced with daily actions and periodic checkpoints. This is how 👏 change 👏 happens 👏.

At the end of this workshop series, 88% of participants better understood their role in improving their team culture. You can too. 👯‍♀️

We often hear ‘change starts at the top.’ Doesn’t that leave you feeling powerless? 🤦🏻‍♀️It definitely left me feeling uninspired as I desperately tried to change the dynamic at my workplace. When I was at the bottom of the food chain, it was hard enough to remember that I can initiate change, let alone inspire my coworkers. But through thoughtful dialogue and patience, my team spent the better part of a year crafting a vision for our new team culture and taking daily steps to achieve that vision. Here's how you can be a catalyst for change:

1️⃣ Envision the culture you want. Do you want a workplace where all ideas are considered? Figure out what it is you need to be at your best and write it down.

2️⃣ Model behavior. If you want others to listen to your ideas more, start listening to their ideas more. Take them by surprise with your own behavioral shift.

3️⃣ Ask questions. Start subtle, with something like, “Why has it always been done that way?” and over time work your way up to bigger questions, like, “Would you want to change our team culture?” The key here is not to interrogate, but to get some dialogue started throughout your team.

Sure, you can absolutely get through the day-to-day slog without being vulnerable... but don't you want your workplace to be more than a slog? 🤔 Your honest vulnerability can diffuse the tension in a stressful situation. Now, I'm not saying burst into tears and talk about your deepest darkest secrets... but something like "Honestly, in other parts of my life I'm feeling like I'm being taken advantage of, and I really dont want to feel that way here," can really take the air out the room. 💆🏻‍♀️ Have you ever tried something like this at work? If you called into work sick, would anybody wonder where you were? 🤷🏻‍♀️ If you have to think about it, it’s time to make a change.

1️⃣ Identify one person at work who engages with you. This doesn’t have to be a peer! Simply identify the person who responds to you more than most coworkers. 👩🏻‍💼
2️⃣ Ask them one question a day. Start with a simple “How was your weekend?” The more you do this, the more natural it will become. Soon you’ll know things about their life and be able to ask questions that show you’re listening, like “Have you and your wife found a dog to adopt?” 🗯
3️⃣ Once you have daily back and forth conversation, try something like “I’m making a coffee run, do you want to join me?” If they say no, go by yourself and ask again after a week or so. Be careful not to make them feel obligated, but keep the invitation open so they know you enjoy their company. ☕
