What changed when I stopped being the backup plan?
My decisions got faster.
There was less "maybe they'll come around" and more "this either aligns or it doesn't."
My standards became non-negotiable.
I stopped accepting half-effort, vague commitment, and last-minute availability as love, friendship, opportunity, or potential.
My calendar changed too.
I stopped leaving empty space just in case someone finally prioritized me and started filling it with my own goals, plans, and life.
My nervous system calmed down.
Less waiting.
Less checking.
Less rereading messages looking for hidden meaning.
My self-trust came back.
I stopped trying to convince myself that inconsistency was chemistry, that potential was reality, or that effort would eventually appear if I was patient enough.
And maybe the biggest shift of all:
The people who liked having convenient access to me slowly disappeared.
The people who genuinely respected me stayed.
Life became a lot more peaceful after that.
