THE GRAND BUSINESS OF VISION

Today, our letter opens with the entrance of an Empress. The grand manifester. Second in the Major Arcana, only to the final card, the World.

This particular Empress is crowned by the Hanging Man, representing a broad and diverse perspective rooted in the greater good. The Empress is the high ruler of the four kingdoms, later represented in the Minor Arcana. The Empress speaks for the better cultivation of all as she works her intent with careful precision and with the practical support of her counterpart, the Emperor. She alone is given complete discretion to shape the landscape of her shared domain.

Grounding her is the High Priestess. It is possible that in her youth, this particular Empress was formally trained in the practices of some divine feminine tradition from which she derived the tool of profound intuition. This Empress trusts deeply in the impressions she gleans from the world around her. It is almost as if she knows what to say and do in all cases because she is listening. This makes her a formidable figure of leadership and cultivation.

The Star to her left suggests that this Empress has carried a singular vision with her since birth. It is only now that she has attained the highest position in the land that she can now begin to incubate and eventually birth this vision for the benefit of her greater world.

Ahead of her, she is destined for a prolonged period of rest and reflection. What she intends to bring into the world, though magnificent, will cost her much time, energy, strength, and fortitude. But once the vision has come to fruition, her primary purpose in her endeavor will be fulfilled.

The four pillars of this Empress’ world include Timing (the wheel), Momentum (the Chariot), Mystery (the Moon), and Openness (the Fool).

Whatever it is that she is envisioning, she does so with tremendous trust because she is wise enough to know that some elements of her manifestations will be outside her control. She also knows that the outcome of manifesting her vision is not something she can decide. Her job is only to develop and then bring the vision to life.

This Empress teaches us that the gift of manifestation is more about the creation process itself, rather than how the manifestation is used after the fact. While the Empress certainly has her own idea about what she is developing, she understands that it will not be her influence alone that will decide the utility of what she creates. That will be the job of the Emperor later.

In the cultivation and manifestation process, completion is the first and foremost goal. We are encouraged to worry less about what will happen after we achieve our design and focus more on completing it in the first place. Until then, our vision is almost useless.

We are also reminded of the importance of rest after achieving our vision. No matter how wondrous, we must allow for how long and involved the process of manifesting was. Once our vision is born, we deserve time to care for ourselves, rest, and reflect on our accomplishments. We deserve support and help where it can be had. The Empress was not entrusted with the responsibilities of her role for nothing. The cultivation of her visions has been a lifelong endeavor. One that only she can accomplish. Her vision, at least while in development, remains hers and hers alone.

AT THE CROSSROADS

Today, the Lovers take center stage in our letter.

Our company's position is to interpret the Lovers as embodying nostalgia. However, in the Rider-Waite tradition, the imagery symbolizes choices. The Lovers is often associated with crossroads and the romantic attachments of our youth. It can sometimes be interpreted as a departure card, capturing the last heartfelt moments before our journey away from everything we have known begins.

When the Lovers appear, it signifies that we have once again reached a checkpoint in our lives where we are encouraged to stop, reflect, and consider carefully which direction to take next. It is essential to consider that our chosen path will inevitably lead to more crossroads, some tried and familiar, some not.

The paths we pick inform the lessons we are due to learn. These lessons may be repeated throughout our lives or only met once. In the former case, we should consider whether what we are re-experiencing lends itself to a greater life theme.

This spread gives us an idea of the themes that might lie ahead.

To the North, the path leads to a new and expansive society where the seeker may find a practical education from a greater worldly teacher. This is signified by the Pope, who is master of the conventional world and its many and varied philosophies. This is a path of formal education of some kind.

To the East, waits the path of entrepreneurship, trade, and showmanship, where the seeker may find a mentor to fashion themselves after or they may leverage a skill or talent to their benefit. This is signified by the Magician, who always looks for a wayward apprentice to pass on his cleverness and material mastery.

To the South, there is a less specific path—one that offers the seeker a deeper insight into their higher self. That road is harsher, more wild and overgrown, yet still discernible to the naked eye. The path governed by Judgment promises the revelation of our greatest purposes at the expense of the exposure of our deepest flaws and secret regrets. If we are willing to endure this road, we will be rewarded with the clear development of our inner voice and better human aspects. The road of judgment examines what has already been. The things we cannot change. It also offers us a chance to explore the things we can. Thus leading to a greater development of the self.

To the East seems a perfectly tranquil path, but its stillness belies something far more unexpected. Death governs the Eastern path. Once ventured down and explored, it will lead to a greater understanding of the natural cycles of life. By being willing to walk side by side with death, we learn to value what remains once something has served its purpose in the world. We learn how to face the inevitability of endings to embrace what is new and young in its development within our lives.

No one road is better or worse than the others, and sooner or later, the seeker will come to walk them all at their own pace and interval.

Only when they have walked them all may they think to return to the first crossroads once more and remember from whence they came.

At the corners stand the four monoliths of perspective, authority, cultivation, and mystery.

We will confront and explore all additional themes regardless of the path we choose to take.

The human lifetime is a tapestry of circumstances and choices. We are asked to consider our options wisely and to be gracious towards ourselves when we inevitably misstep.

The monoliths remind us that the meanings of the journeys we undertake are primarily influenced by the way we perceive them, our authority or lack of authority, the levels of cultivation required to help us along the way, and the way we decide to react to the things we cannot know, control, or influence.

We are encouraged to respect and be accountable for our choices. Some will be more informed than others. But if we endure, our reward is the inevitable return to where we started—renewed and better acquainted with the world.

THE MAGICIAN'S LESSON

The Magician stands at the heart of the spread today. As is his way, he demands that our attentions remain centered upon him, for he is the skilled manifester of earthly wiles.

The Magician is mischievous and cunning. He is a skillful manifester who tailors his performances to the whims of his personal needs and deeper desires. He is a master of persuasion and an expert in his field of choice.

The Magician stands as living proof that we can become anything we set our mind to, provided that we utilize the correct tools and leverage the correct skills to our advantage. The Magician is the masculine counterpart of the High Priestess. Where she is intuitive and lofty about executing her intentions, the Magician is deliberate and grounded in his. While he could use his mastery of the material world for higher things, for the time being, he cares only to focus on his most direct needs and wants.

The Magician is one of the most dynamic manifestors in the tarot. His presence directs us to focus on ourselves rather than the demands of our outer world.

Are we satisfied when we look within? Or are there things we dislike? Things we wish to improve on or to develop? Are we fully utilizing the tools we have readily at our disposal? Do we need to gather more?

While the Magician is motivated by the creative necessity of the moment, the secret to his success is a more profound, mysterious, and personal drive towards a greater intention that only he knows.

We all have secret dreams—things we don't readily speak about but hold onto throughout our lives. Even when we are more vocal about our desires, purposes, and intentions, manifesting them may take an unknown amount of time and effort.

The Magician encourages us to find solace and joy in the temporary elements of our lives. He encourages us to roll with our advantages as we find them and to accept that setbacks and losses are a part of the game. He also assures us of the importance of putting ourselves first and taking our leisure as we find it. Our dreams belong to us alone and can be pursued at any time.

To this point, to the Magician's left is the star—the far-away vision that set him on his path and continues acting as his compass going forward.

To his right is the Hanging Man. A figure that, in the context of this interpretation, represents the Magician at rest. His necessary work is now done for the day, and he allows himself the luxury of relaxation and reflection. A chance to look at things from a new and different perspective.

As we live out the temporary minutiae of our lives, we are encouraged to never lose sight of our higher dreams and innermost wishes. Everything we have done informs what we are doing. Likewise, what we do now will inevitably inform what we do in the future. To this end, resting and checking in with ourselves is beneficial and wise.

When we stop and look at the bigger picture, do we still align with our higher goals? Are there new paths we could choose to take? Are there new skills and tools we should aim to acquire and master?

In the context of this letter, we will now consider the Magician's higher considerations. Above him are the considerations of his higher ideals.

It is here that he is confronted with the Empress. A superior manifester in the sense that she governs not only her own dreams but the dreams of countless others. Where the Magician’s scope of influence is small and select, the Empress governs a broad and diverse realm, reminding the Magician that his ambitions and desires, though important, are not the only ambitions and desires at play.

No person is an island. For better or worse, the Empress reminds us that our individual concerns are not the only concerns that matter. To some extent, we must consider our roles and place within our greater communities and the smaller circles of influence that overlap within our personal lives. We must consider how our individual wants and needs mesh with the demands and pressures of the greater environment.

Can our ambitions move in tandem with those of society? Or are we being called to travel elsewhere to other communities we may better integrate with? The choice is ours.

The Chariot crowns the Magician, reminding us that we must be mindful of the pace of the world in relation to the desired pacing of our personal lives.

While we always have some control over our feelings, thoughts, and behavior, we do not entirely control anything else. The Magician calls upon us to remain flexible and fluid as we navigate the fast-paced world. He encourages us to find our rhythm and join life's greater dance.

Below the Magian lay the underlying secrets that fuel his motives.

We discover, quite to our surprise, that underneath all the theater of his day, the Magician is really treading the path of the hermit. This implies that what he is doing now is really just a holding place. A temporary opportunity for him to rest and guard himself while he waits to move forward with his greater plans.

This serves as an example of our identities and the roles we take on. It reminds us that our work does not always define the people we are or always indicate what we desire. Our jobs, careers, environments, and circles of influence we enjoy in the moment may be a placeholder—a familiar and repetitive holdover. These things may serve as our short—or long-term shelter while we dream of greater and different things.

Acknowledging that he is not idle in the Magician's case is essential. Though his place and role are temporary, he uses them to his advantage. And why not? Why shouldn't he line his pockets in preparation for his next endeavor? Why not make a few friends and put his talents on blast?

At the end of the day, the Magician's greatest desire is to be happy. He is the harbinger of the eternal summer, symbolizing a life full of warmth, ease, and beauty. The magician, in this context, does not just long for peace and freedom but also for boundless joy. He wishes to enjoy his life to the full extent of what it can be, and he knows that by achieving this, he will become a beacon for others seeking what he has achieved.

What is our highest expression of peace and joy? What does it look like? How does it feel? How does it taste and sound? How can we bring these elements forward? Where can we sprinkle them in?

The Magician carries elements of his more profound happiness wherever he goes. He is not content to toil aimlessly, holding off for some far-off reward that may never come. Truly, he believes in his final reward, but he's not about to deny himself what pleasures he can find in the moment. That is the core of his greater wisdom. The thing he prefers to express by way of example to us.

Finally, the Magician longs to become one with the world around him. He desires to blend so much into the fabric of his world that he almost disappears into its larger pattern completely. He does not desire to lose himself but instead to become so integrated that he can never be divorced from the world again.

Perhaps this is the root of his secret innermost dream, or perhaps it is the end result of achieving it.

In any case, the world symbolized the great completion and return to our origin. We find that even after our most significant achievements and highest purposes are met, we inevitably return to where we began.

The Fool’s journey is not linear; it is cyclical.

Even in death, the traces of our lives and journeys contribute to the development of countless others, thus continuing the thread of human experience indefinitely.

The magician's parting sentiment is that every person, place, and thing matters. No detail is insignificant. No dream is too big or too small. Our lives are our own, and we shape and leverage them to the best of our ability to achieve what we can manage and imagine.

Whatever happens, it is imperative that we never give up and never allow ourselves to believe we don't matter.

We do.

THE ACTUALIZATION OF PERSONAL VISION

The Empress helps us understand that everyone has a unique vision of their desired reality. Our visions as individuals and those we project outward into larger systems are complex. They often incubate for extended periods, waiting, growing, and deepening their significance as time passes. It is up to the Visionary how well and how long they hold their vision, how they may execute it, by what means, and to what ends.

The Wheel reminds us that no matter the intensity of our visions, the actualization and effectiveness of the vision are always subject to the timing and conditions of the Visionary's environments, which may or may not be within the Visionary's control.

Thus, it is essential to utilize and seek out the qualities of the Hermit, either by observing diligence, patience, and introspection, or by seeking out systems of support that will protect and nourish the Visionary as they wait for their vision to ripen and actualize. The Visionary must be mindful and discerning regarding the higher influence of the conditions around them.

The Devil reminds us that the things that bring us a sense of passion, reward, accomplishment, attention, and pleasure are not always in our best interest. What feels pleasurable to our mind's eye may indeed feel good to us, but it may not actually be good for us. Sometimes, the better, more righteous, and empowering path lies more in what makes us uncomfortable and what may be more challenging to achieve.

Nevertheless, through Strength, we understand the necessity of equity and equality in pursuing our visionary actualizations. Strength shows us that the lion and the woman (masculine and feminine energies) can and must walk as one. The duality of Strength mirrors the mutual roles of other cards in the Tarot, such as the Empress and Emperor, and the tempering abilities of Temperance.

When in doubt, we may look to the Pope, who is already well versed in the preexisting systems of our world. The systems the Pope studies and maintains can be relied on to guide and inspire us.

It is essential to acknowledge that even when preexisting systems are flawed, broken, ineffective, or problematic, they can still guide us towards progress and innovation because we may be called to either improve what already is or to envision and execute something better or different.

The Moon assures us that it is okay not to know precisely what we are doing, where we are going, or what we might achieve.

The Emperor assures us that there will be leaders we can turn to and rely upon to help us plan, direct, execute, and oversee what our visions require to be actualized, and that we can learn to become leaders in pursuing our ideas.

Finally, the High Priestess encourages us never to abandon our higher intention, our deepest principles, and the callings of our greater selves. Deep inside us exists a well of knowledge, experience, and deeper knowing that will be within us to use. The Priestess stands with the Hermit in his diligent solitude and comforts the Pope when the tremendous pressures of his responsibilities threaten to cause him to forget who he is and what he wants for himself.

The four pillars of desire, convention, mystery, and intuition testify to the value of our individual and collective visions.

Only we have the power to bring our deepest visions and dreams faithfully into actuality.
