THE MAGICIAN'S LESSON
The Magician stands at the heart of the spread today. As is his way, he demands that our attentions remain centered upon him, for he is the skilled manifester of earthly wiles.
The Magician is mischievous and cunning. He is a skillful manifester who tailors his performances to the whims of his personal needs and deeper desires. He is a master of persuasion and an expert in his field of choice.
The Magician stands as living proof that we can become anything we set our mind to, provided that we utilize the correct tools and leverage the correct skills to our advantage. The Magician is the masculine counterpart of the High Priestess. Where she is intuitive and lofty about executing her intentions, the Magician is deliberate and grounded in his. While he could use his mastery of the material world for higher things, for the time being, he cares only to focus on his most direct needs and wants.
The Magician is one of the most dynamic manifestors in the tarot. His presence directs us to focus on ourselves rather than the demands of our outer world.
Are we satisfied when we look within? Or are there things we dislike? Things we wish to improve on or to develop? Are we fully utilizing the tools we have readily at our disposal? Do we need to gather more?
While the Magician is motivated by the creative necessity of the moment, the secret to his success is a more profound, mysterious, and personal drive towards a greater intention that only he knows.
We all have secret dreams—things we don't readily speak about but hold onto throughout our lives. Even when we are more vocal about our desires, purposes, and intentions, manifesting them may take an unknown amount of time and effort.
The Magician encourages us to find solace and joy in the temporary elements of our lives. He encourages us to roll with our advantages as we find them and to accept that setbacks and losses are a part of the game. He also assures us of the importance of putting ourselves first and taking our leisure as we find it. Our dreams belong to us alone and can be pursued at any time.
To this point, to the Magician's left is the star—the far-away vision that set him on his path and continues acting as his compass going forward.
To his right is the Hanging Man. A figure that, in the context of this interpretation, represents the Magician at rest. His necessary work is now done for the day, and he allows himself the luxury of relaxation and reflection. A chance to look at things from a new and different perspective.
As we live out the temporary minutiae of our lives, we are encouraged to never lose sight of our higher dreams and innermost wishes. Everything we have done informs what we are doing. Likewise, what we do now will inevitably inform what we do in the future. To this end, resting and checking in with ourselves is beneficial and wise.
When we stop and look at the bigger picture, do we still align with our higher goals? Are there new paths we could choose to take? Are there new skills and tools we should aim to acquire and master?
In the context of this letter, we will now consider the Magician's higher considerations. Above him are the considerations of his higher ideals.
It is here that he is confronted with the Empress. A superior manifester in the sense that she governs not only her own dreams but the dreams of countless others. Where the Magician’s scope of influence is small and select, the Empress governs a broad and diverse realm, reminding the Magician that his ambitions and desires, though important, are not the only ambitions and desires at play.
No person is an island. For better or worse, the Empress reminds us that our individual concerns are not the only concerns that matter. To some extent, we must consider our roles and place within our greater communities and the smaller circles of influence that overlap within our personal lives. We must consider how our individual wants and needs mesh with the demands and pressures of the greater environment.
Can our ambitions move in tandem with those of society? Or are we being called to travel elsewhere to other communities we may better integrate with? The choice is ours.
The Chariot crowns the Magician, reminding us that we must be mindful of the pace of the world in relation to the desired pacing of our personal lives.
While we always have some control over our feelings, thoughts, and behavior, we do not entirely control anything else. The Magician calls upon us to remain flexible and fluid as we navigate the fast-paced world. He encourages us to find our rhythm and join life's greater dance.
Below the Magian lay the underlying secrets that fuel his motives.
We discover, quite to our surprise, that underneath all the theater of his day, the Magician is really treading the path of the hermit. This implies that what he is doing now is really just a holding place. A temporary opportunity for him to rest and guard himself while he waits to move forward with his greater plans.
This serves as an example of our identities and the roles we take on. It reminds us that our work does not always define the people we are or always indicate what we desire. Our jobs, careers, environments, and circles of influence we enjoy in the moment may be a placeholder—a familiar and repetitive holdover. These things may serve as our short—or long-term shelter while we dream of greater and different things.
Acknowledging that he is not idle in the Magician's case is essential. Though his place and role are temporary, he uses them to his advantage. And why not? Why shouldn't he line his pockets in preparation for his next endeavor? Why not make a few friends and put his talents on blast?
At the end of the day, the Magician's greatest desire is to be happy. He is the harbinger of the eternal summer, symbolizing a life full of warmth, ease, and beauty. The magician, in this context, does not just long for peace and freedom but also for boundless joy. He wishes to enjoy his life to the full extent of what it can be, and he knows that by achieving this, he will become a beacon for others seeking what he has achieved.
What is our highest expression of peace and joy? What does it look like? How does it feel? How does it taste and sound? How can we bring these elements forward? Where can we sprinkle them in?
The Magician carries elements of his more profound happiness wherever he goes. He is not content to toil aimlessly, holding off for some far-off reward that may never come. Truly, he believes in his final reward, but he's not about to deny himself what pleasures he can find in the moment. That is the core of his greater wisdom. The thing he prefers to express by way of example to us.
Finally, the Magician longs to become one with the world around him. He desires to blend so much into the fabric of his world that he almost disappears into its larger pattern completely. He does not desire to lose himself but instead to become so integrated that he can never be divorced from the world again.
Perhaps this is the root of his secret innermost dream, or perhaps it is the end result of achieving it.
In any case, the world symbolized the great completion and return to our origin. We find that even after our most significant achievements and highest purposes are met, we inevitably return to where we began.
The Fool’s journey is not linear; it is cyclical.
Even in death, the traces of our lives and journeys contribute to the development of countless others, thus continuing the thread of human experience indefinitely.
The magician's parting sentiment is that every person, place, and thing matters. No detail is insignificant. No dream is too big or too small. Our lives are our own, and we shape and leverage them to the best of our ability to achieve what we can manage and imagine.
Whatever happens, it is imperative that we never give up and never allow ourselves to believe we don't matter.
We do.
