For immediate release
December 12, 2022

Eleven years ago, friends and supporters joined me in celebration of our hard-earned and unlikely victory for the Ward 5 council seat in Saint Paul. As a kid growing up in a very low-income, single-parent household, I never would have imagined myself one day being an elected official. My life’s journey was sometimes bumpy, but it taught me to be resourceful, assertive, kind, and to *always* challenge the status quo. In 2011, I ran an unconventional and energetic campaign as a political outsider while working full-time and raising three young kids. My win surprised many, and it signaled a changing of the guard. It was a thrill!

Today, I am announcing my intention to step aside at the end of my current term in December 2023. The City Council campaign cycle starts soon, so I am making this early announcement to clear a path for new candidates to step up to run to represent Ward 5.

In the coming year, I will leverage my role and my experience to engage with our progressive leaders at the federal, state, and county levels to build momentum on Saint Paul’s forward-thinking priorities. I am also fine-tuning a very aggressive “to-do list” of projects and policy goals that I intend to advance over this next year. It will likely be called the “We Turn it Up to Eleven” list. (IYKYK)

The resounding outcomes of last month’s election (in Minnesota particularly) have solidified my decision. Our community’s firm rejection of divisiveness and fear, and its clear unification around service and progress create the perfect opportunity for me to pass the torch and make room for fresh faces. One of the greatest joys of this work has been using the platform to uplift emerging leaders, especially women and women of color. Before I won in 2011, there was only one woman serving on the Saint Paul city council. Today we make up five of seven members– a “super majority”. The future is bright, and I’m very excited about what is yet to come.

I am very proud of what I have contributed and accomplished in these first eleven, incredible years. I appreciate your continued engagement, encouragement, and high expectations. As we turn it up to eleven over the next year, please join me for a lake lap or contact my office to connect as we continue to move forward.

Metro Transit is working to identify the next arterial BRT lines to be implemented! Metro Transit is working to identify the region's next arterial BRT lines.

In 2019, Metro Transit reviewed regional transit policy, considered the performance of the existing bus network, and sought public input and ideas that resulted in the identification of 19 potential BRT corridors. From those 19 candidate corridors, Metro Transit is focusing on 11 corridors that were identified as most promising for BRT implementation.

One of which is of particular interest to folks in Ward 5, Ward 1 and Ward 2 is a Rice Street to Robert Street BRT!

We are now seeking input from our riders and the communities we serve, to help narrow the list of potential BRT lines to the top 3 corridors by the end of the year.

FILL OUT THE SURVEY HERE: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/futurebus

The corridors will be selected and prioritized based on community input and on how well they advance these four principles:
Advance equity and reduce regional racial disparities
Build on success to grow ridership
Support a transit-oriented lifestyle
Ensure the long-term sustainable growth of the bus network
