As pest control professionals, we strive to be as ethical and humane as reasonably possible on a case by case basis. If you are doing your own pest control at home, you have to make the decision that you feel comfortable with. Would we ever use antifreeze in a bucket on our own home? No. We have access to traps and rodenticide products that are far superior and have the knowledge to use them safely and efficiently. If you don’t have a lot of money, already have a liquid on hand and are not concerned with the pain inflicted to the rodent, antifreeze attracts them quickly and easily and kills them. Our stance for controlling a rat infestation is human safety first. So if you can’t afford a more humane method, that is acceptable if it means keeping your family safe from the litany of diseases that rats can transmit to humans. Should it be your first option? No. Is it acceptable if that is all you can do? The means may justify the ends.
