M Danderson Consulting Group MARK ON THE SHORE

I retired from the publishing industry and moved to the Delmarva Peninsula. Join me as I explore and learn about my new home.

I review restaurants, museums, parks, trails, retail, events, excursions, tours and hotels on Delmarva. I retired from the continuing medical education industry a few years ago. In an effort to learn and appreciate my new home, I write a travel blog about the Delmarva Peninsula. I explore and write reviews on restaurants, museums, retail, excursions and tours, and our local parks located in this historic and beautiful peninsula from the bay to the shore.

I have lived here for years, yet have never taken a local tour. So I decided to start with Su***de Bridge Restaurant's Choptank River Cruises. Su***de Bridge Restaurant has been running paddlewheel riverboats for several decades. It is the only paddlewheel tour on the Delmarva, making it unique. The tour is short, only a couple of hours. But you get good food, live entertainment, and some excellent views of the river. I can't think of a better way of spending a pleasant summer's afternoon, while enjoying some of the things that make this area so special.

I view Vietnamese cuisine as Asia's answer to French cuisine. It is delicate, aromatic, and sophisticated. It is hard to find good Vietnamese on the Delmarva. Pho Van in Easton, Maryland offers authentic Vietnamese.

Delmarva may be small. It may be a backwater. Besides being beautiful, it is an historical treasure. It plays a central role in American history. This is the Bucktown General Store, where Harriet Tubman was hit with a lead weight, an event that changed the course of her life, and of a nation.

Juneteenth is just around the corner. You can learn about her story at the Underground Railroad Museum. One of the best curated museums I have ever visited.

The Pocomoke Nature Trail in Pocomoke City, has everything. An iconic drawbridge and museum at the start, a cypress swamp, legend holds that it is haunted by howling ghosts of a mother and child, a hardwood forest, flowering trees, and one of the best craft brewers in the area at the end. What more could you ask of a trail?

PocomokeCity, Maryland would not be on anyone's travel itinerary. And that is a shame because it contains a haunted nature trail through a cypress swamp, an excellent craft brewer, an excellent museum, a beautiful setting on the Pocomoke River, and the state's last remaining double-leaf bascule drawbridge.

This weekend Bordeleau Winery held its annual strawberry festival. I used to live in wine country, and I thought that one of the negatives of living here would be the lack of vineyards. But I was wrong. There are in fact, a number of decent vineyards on the Delmarva. And one of the best is just down the road in Eden. The owner, Tom Sheldon has a knack for making some of the best red wines in the state. I have spent a great deal of time with Tom, he is a perfectionist and a master at his craft. Bordeleau is his retirement project, I could only imagine what he would have done if he had made this his career.
What I like about Princess Anne is that this town is full of stories like this, local people realizing their dream, and doing it with dedication.

I enjoy communing with nature as much as the next guy. But sometimes I want more out of a hike. The short St Michaels Nature Trail in St Michaels, Maryland showcases everything I love about the Delmarva, historic charm, great food, the Chesapeake Bay, farm land, forests, and marshes.

It doesn't get any more Maryland's Eastern Shore than a smoked open-faced turkey sandwich while watching waterman load their boats at the marina on Tilghman Island. Big Mack's Kitchen promises "we gonna eat good," and they deliver.

The people of Salisbury no longer have to drive to Cambridge to sample RAR beers. RAR just opened a new Chessie's at the old Voodoo location on South Salisbury Blvd across from Gull Square. Both the beer and food menu selection is smaller than in Cambridge, but the beer is as good as ever. This is a New England Hazy IPA and a Kimchi Cheeseburger. Their NE Hazy IPA is my new favorite RAR beer.

Few places on the Delmarva combine natural beauty and historic charm as well as Onancock, Virginia. A walk on the Onancock Nature Trail takes you on a journey through cypress swamps, a botanical garden of native flowering plants, and watery vistas.

The great thing about this walk, you can combine it with a walk through historic Onancock, for my money, one of the prettiest towns on the Delmarva. If you haven't been, you should put it on your list. While you are in town, I highly recommend Bizzotto's and the Ker Museum.
