Kerri Burchill - North Star Coaching I help leaders and teams slow down to go fast and achieve ambitious results.

"Wear a cocktail dress and comfortable shoes."

Isn't that an oxymoron? I've never worn comfortable shoes with a cocktail dress... but this night with the Fight Club I did (ridiculous as it may have looked!)

It was so much fun escorting these boxers to the ring.

🥊🥊 Each boxer volunteered to fight on behalf of their company.

That is pretty brave in my books!

I had to work at being sensitive to their needs.

While I was jumping out of my skin in excitement at the opportunity to support their courage, some needed silence on the walk to the ring.

Some needed a cheerleader.

Some needed to know the facts about the how the next few minutes would play out.

Social awareness (right next to cocktail dresses and comfortable shoes 👟👟) is a must in our work leading others.

It was good to slow down and be super intentional about leveraging my EQ and social intelligence skills.

The practical definition of leadership:

"...leadership is about empowering other people as a result of your presence."

I liked that simple definition, and I especially liked the additional part

"-and making sure that impact continues in your absence."

"Such a wealth of information in a short time."

That is the benefit of being a teacher in my first career, I suppose.

I can help others learn in a way that is efficient and effective... and fun!

Grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the momentum of these military personnel transitioning into civilian life.

When I was not yet done my student teaching rotation, I told my principal, "I want those keys" and pointed to his thwack of master keys for the school.

Back then what was I?

Someone who was focusing on politicking.

To the principal's credit, he giggled and ended up hiring me.

Did I emerge?

Thankfully, yes...

Not without the principal's help... and so many other mentors.

This definition of "leadership emergence" below from a Hogan Assessment seminar I attended was spot-on.

Being emerging isn't good or bad... it's just part of the emergence. Without someone helping us see how we are perceived, however, it can be bad.

Thanks to Ryne Sherman and Jackie Sham for their insights.

🤔 I was recently on a lunch and learn with Hogan Assessments and they were talking about

👉 the leaders we have

verses

🥇 the leaders we want.

Hogan assessments explore how we are perceived, verses self-reported strengths. It's unique, which is part of why I love it. And the only assessment I know of that looks at how we are perceived.

What is interesting about the insights from Hogan's global research is that we are missing leaders with

👏 teamwork and
👏 data-driven decision-makers.

What would you say you do? More on the left or more on the right of the chart below?

Thanks to Ryne Sherman and Jackie Sahm for hosting.

Not with the ICF - San Antonio Chapter - but sometimes volunteering can suck. I'm not gonna lie.

I'm mean sure . . .

💚 It feels good to give service
💚 It's nice to believe you're helping
💚 It's great to meet other people with similar interests.

But my experiences have sometimes been a little on the dysfunctional side.

When you get pictures like this 👇 (thanks to Chris Nguyenfor his amazing talent), you have evidence that your volunteering is making a difference. Even better:

🎯 People are learning
🎯 People are laughing
🎯 People feel safe

Here's the thing about rolling in the grass...

When you need to roll... there's little you can do to stop it.

Just like our team members. When they need to let off some steam, or they need to rejuvenate, it's just what it is.

They will find a way to get their needs met either way.

The proactive strategy is to recognize what they need in advance so that "the roll" offers as little disruption as possible.

Even better - you know your own needs and can manage those too...
