Writing: Apostrophes replace a letter or letters, even in slang: do not-->don't , I have-->I've, 1970s-->'70s, going-->gonna', coming-->comin'
I say words fully to myself if in doubt of where to put an apostrophe.
Apostrophes as possession is another lesson.

I'll post unusual words (chuff) and word confusables (pore/pour) as I run across them.

Chuff, a verb, is used often in Britain and means proud, happy with oneself. "The Heat were quite chuffed that they won The NBA Finals"
Pore, a verb, means to look over or read carefully
Pour, a verb, means to spill liquid from a spout or container lip.
He pored over the instructions but couldn't get the machine to pour his coffee.

My favorite book for writers is On Writing Well by David Zinsser. He does give advice for how write non-fiction, but the book is not a series of rules. It has a comforting tone to it, like a worker mentor.
