China is deploying autonomous electric mining trucks that can transport heavy loads without a human driver, combining battery power with AI, sensors and advanced connectivity. In February 2026, Chinese EV giant BYD invested 100 million yuan (about $14.5 million) in Boonray to accelerate its Level 4 autonomous, battery-swapping mining technology.
Boonray says its system can automate both truck operation and battery swapping, allowing mining vehicles to work continuously while reducing workers’ exposure to dangerous environments. Its autonomous technology has reportedly been deployed across more than 30 mining projects involving different ores and operating conditions.
The technology is already being deployed at large scale in China, a fleet of 100 autonomous all-electric mining trucks began operating at the Yimin open-pit mine in Inner Mongolia, using 5G-Advanced connectivity and AI-based systems. The trucks can operate around the clock and were designed to improve safety and efficiency in harsh mining conditions.
China’s autonomous-transport expansion extends beyond mining, with thousands of heavy-duty trucks already accumulating large commercial operating mileage; Inceptio reported more than 200 million km of commercial autonomous-truck operations. The broader shift shows how China is moving from pilot projects toward large-scale deployment of AI, electrification and automation in heavy industry, although claims about “thousands” of fully autonomous vehicles and millions of kilometres per day should be distinguished from partially automated systems.
