Last friday, Sean Davies of DFO closed area A of the BC coastline for crab fishing, only days before the annual opening. This unprecedented decision was based off little empirical data and a general lack of knowledge of how the fishery works

Flying in the face of positive results from test fishing in the area, which indicate a strong body of crab, DFO has decided to unilaterally shut down the BC coastline for crab fishing. This decision comes at the start of the fishing season and will destroy any chances of a successful season for 2013. This fishery directly supports 1,000's of workers in BC and is a vital source of direct and indirect revenue for many towns and cities in BC. This irresponsible decision made by DFO will unnecessarily and negatively impact the north coast of BC this year and for many years to come as it will most likely put a variety of small to medium sized companies out of business in areas that are already struggling.
