In loving memory in art and life
Scott Courtlandt Davis ’05 (1954 – 2020)
It is with great sadness that artist and friend Scott Courtlandt Davis passed away suddenly on February 7, 2020 at the age of 65. He was born in Keene, New Hampshire to John Russell Davis and Elinor Davis, and was the youngest of three children.
A prolific artist, he earned his BA Degree in Mass Communications and Studio Art from University of New Hampshire, Durham in 1976. In 1980 Scott moved to Los Angeles, where he met his eventual wife and artistic partner Denise. Scott earned an MFA in Art/Photography & Media in 2005 at California Institute of the Arts. Their collaboration in ongoing and exhaustive creative ventures under their nom d’art, Davis & Davis, began immediately after they started dating. Their first art photography series was Modern Romance in which they portrayed all characters in the nearly four dozen couple dramas. The two began their courtship within a year and were married in 1985.
The artwork of Davis & Davis has been shown all over the world in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including no heroics please at REDCAT in Los Angeles, CA; Dangerous Beauty at Chelsea Art Museum in New York, NY and PAN Palazzo delle Arti Napoli in Naples, Italy; Childish Things at Riverside Art Museum in Riverside, CA; MetaPet Launch at MOCA the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, CA; the solo exhibitions Childish Things & Small Talents; Climates of Deception; Planet X; and Ring the Changes at Marx & Zavattero in San Francisco, CA; Not So Cute & Cuddly: Dolls & Stuffed Toys in Contemporary Art at the Ulrich Museum of Art in Wichita, KS; Unseriously Serious at Linda Warren Gallery in Chicago, IL; And the Dish Ran Away with The Spoon at Collectors Contemporary in Singapore; and Childish Things & Small Talents at Kenji Yokoo Fine Arts in Tokyo, Japan.
Davis and Davis’ book of their lost and abandoned toy series narrative, Childish Things, was published by Santa Monica Press in 2004. Their work can be found at www.davisanddavis.org as well as in the public collections of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn, NY; the Ulrich Museum of Art, Wichita, KS; The Kinsey Institute Indiana University, Bloomington, IL; Jean Pigozzi Collection, Geneva, Switzerland; California State University Los Angeles, CA; State Polytechnic University Pomona, CA; Genentech, South San Francisco, CA; and Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Redwood City, CA as well as many private collections.
Davis & Davis were well known and recognized throughout the gallery scene for their consummate professionalism, wicked sense of humor, and generous intelligence. Their exhibitions at gallery spaces and art fairs worldwide were always met with great enthusiasm and enjoyment by viewers of all ages. The unique and extremely meticulous collaborations created by the two partners will be sorely missed in the art world.
A passionate political advocate, Scott is survived by his loving wife of 35 years Denise Davis, brother Jon, sister Pam, and many friends in the arts community.
