It was an honor to be invited by National Policing Institute President Jim Burch to attend this meeting and share my thoughts on this highly important topic.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is poised to revolutionize law enforcement. Rather than resisting it, as many in law enforcement have traditionally done with new ideas, tools, and procedures, they must embrace AI and integrate it into their operations. After all, AI is here to stay.

Law enforcement leaders must not only embrace AI, but find ways of implementing it in a manner that best meets their organizations and communities’ needs. The law enforcement leader also needs to realize that their opinion and perspectives on AI will set the tone for how their organization will accept it and utilize it. Like any tool, AI is not intended to replace officers or their critical thinking, decision-making, and investigative skills. Instead, it is designed to enhance their abilities, enabling them to combat crime more effectively and allowing them to better protect and serve their communities.

March 25 is National Medal of Honor Day. This day honors the recipients of the United States’ highest military decoration for bravery, In honor of National Medal of Honor Day, I would like to recognize those Medal of Honor recipients who in addition to their time in the military were also Law Enforcement Professionals.

They were Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines, they were Federal, State, County, and Municipal Officers. They were Enlisted and Commissioned, they were Police Commissioners, Police Chiefs, Sheriffs, and Beat Cops, They fought in conflicts from the Civil War to Afghanistan, they policed large City’s, Small Towns, and the open plains. They were career Military whose Law Enforcement careers were short and impactful. They were career Law Enforcement Officers whose deeds on the battlefield were legendary. They number less than 50 of the 3,547 Medal of Honors awarded and two gave their lives as Law Enforcement Officers engaging armed criminals. They were simply heroes in any uniform they wore.

We must never forget them, we must never forget their heroism, we must never forget their service.

In law enforcement, there are no born leaders, and rank alone doesn’t make someone a leader. Law enforcement leaders develop a set of skills and traits through experience, exposure, hard work, and dedication. While it won’t make you a leader, Leadership in Law Enforcement can guide you on your leadership journey.

I am proud to have joined Code Four (YC X25) as a Senior Law Enforcement Advisor. Code Four uses state of the art computer vision and AI (artificial intelligence) models which ingest body camera, dash camera, and CCTV footage to generate police incident reports, reports narratives, and video redactions and at a fraction of the time it currently takes and cost that is budget friendly for law enforcement agencies.

Code Four’s technology will let cops get out from behind their desks and stacks of paperwork and back onto the streets where they can make a difference in their community. It will also aide Professional Staff personnel by making the video redaction process less timely and redundant, thereby freeing them to tend to their numerous other duties. By using their advanced technology, Code Four can reduce the amount of time it takes to prepare reports and redact videos from hours to minutes while losing no detail, completeness, or essential information.

While Code Four uses advanced technology to prepare draft reports and redact videos, Officers and Professional Staff remain 100% responsible for the the contents of the report and the scope of the video redactions. While Code Four’s technology assists, people are still responsible to ensure that their report or redactions are properly done and meet all lawful requirements.

Please visit https://codefour.us to learn more about Code Four. For those Law Enforcement agencies interested, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

I recently appeared on A Cop’s Life Podcast (Episode #23) hosted by Randy Sutton. Randy is a highly decorated retired Lieutenant from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, author, and founder of The Wounded Blue, is one of greatest and most vocal spokesmen and supporters of Law Enforcement and Police Officers there is. It was an honor to be asked to join him to talk about the profession we both love. Randy and I spoke openly and candidly about topics such as my law enforcement career and experiences, my family’s law enforcement service, leadership, the realities of policing today, and my book Leadership In Law Enforcement (www.code33consulting.com/orderbook or via Amazon).
