I never thought I’d be brave enough to wear something so bold—these Gucci x shorts.

For years, I played it safe. Simple top, simple bottom, sneakers or boots. No fuss, no risks. I never really thought about how my style could be a reflection of my voice.

But as I grew into my work as a stylist, I realized something: the way I show up in the world matters. My style isn’t just about clothes—it shapes my confidence, my ideas, my presence.

So, I knew I had to push myself. I had tried to wear these shorts twice before (movie night? nope. Coffee meeting? definitely not). It never felt right.

But Friday night? That was the moment . I ditched my all-black safety net, threw on these shorts, layered up, and headed
out. No second-guessing. Just owning it.

And the magic of this look? It wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t stepped into someone else’s closet first. Huge thanks to for these rad Gucci shorts from the .house swap and to .club for the amazing indie disco parties at for keeping my style
inspired.

learned: Sometimes, the right piece isn’t about the when—it’s about who you’ve become when you’re finally ready to wear it.

Breakdown of my thought process coming soon!

To grow into the best version of yourself inside and outside takes time - sometimes longer than expected to work through the ‘hell’ or ‘pain’ and ‘awkwardness’of figuring who you want to embody.

Thats the part about self discovery and your style.

It’s not about a one size fits all type. It’s not about defining your style as one aesthetic such as cosmopolitan and limiting yourself to only looking that way. And it’s more than buying the trendy in season things as it’s about exploring who you are and allowing your style to mirror this new you.

Because you are becoming this new person and your style allows you have fun and be someone you couldn’t before. That’s the best part.

This is 2024 me having gone on a continual exploration of trying new styles and embracing things out of the ordinary. If you had asked the old me if I would be open to wearing a funky denim vest I’d have refused.

Swipe right to see 2018 me at outside lands awkward, nervous, unsure and scared of putting myself out there.

Much gratitude goes to my sister for the wisdom and energy to see past old beliefs. Be open to trying new things as you evolve. Let yourself shine and see what a new style can do for your path.

Do you remember the first time you stepped into unfamiliar territory as the new you?

For most of my life especially when I had a career in Customs brokerage I was always reserved in what I wore. Frumpy cardigans. Always purging my closet because I was frustrated and didn’t know who I was.

and even when I started this journey of being a stylist, I had a lot of awkward moments, and a lot of in between periods were I really was embarrassed, or afraid to put myself out there.

and a few years ago, I took the plunge and went to Miami Music week. And if you know me, that’s a huge leap because I really don’t think I’m that cool I’m really nerdy and dorky and quirky. And Miami always feels like the place for all the cool kids.

I decided that I had to try whether I felt like I was ready to go and whether I had the right clothes or it was the right time to test exploring this adventurous brave side of myself.

I had gone to a restaurant for some oysters and a glass of wine before heading back to my air bnb to rest and for another event that night.

I was not in a particularly chatty mood, but more of an observer. When I left the restaurant, and I was looking at all the different signs and trying to figure out which direction that was headed to a woman, rolled down her window as she was driving by, and she hollered at me.

she was a woman sitting next to me at the restaurant, and she said that she loved my earrings and the way I put my outfit together.

The funny thing is, I was totally in awe at what she had put together.

but the thing is, there’s never a perfect time and you just have to start now, and that’s what I started to do is kept experimenting until I landed in a much more confident and self-assured place inside and outside.

Part of it was getting clear on what I wanted to do in my work and saying no to all the things I didn’t wanna do and honoring my values and my boundaries.

and I think they’re a lot of that discovery. I landed in a place where I felt really comfortable and much more confident, and I purge my closet a lot less I work with what I have and I reinvented they reimagine and that’s the beauty of discovering who you’re becoming is that magic.

Do you remember the first time?

Do you remember the first time you stepped out into the world feeling like a badass and unstoppable?

What were you wearing? Who were you meeting? And what was the occasion? What was the goal?

For me it was going to Miami Music week and ultra music festival. I wanted people to know me as the stylist who is on a path to show people how to reinvent their style and image just as I am doing.

A lot of people have always known me as someone who is very nerdy and Book smart because of my background in customs brokerage. And I had to show people this is the new Janet, the one that was still book smart but creative, fun, had a flair for putting looks together and adventurous.

When I go out, I am thinking of how to best express myself, and bring my work to my self expression.

and I had always had a block around going to Miami music week even though there’s no gatekeeping access it’s open to anyone. It was always on my bucket list of events to go to because it was fun and it was a great opportunity to test a new environment and how I could show up.

so I wore this bright pink mini skirt and a blue and white ruffled cropped top and went to have oysters and a glass of wine.

And I remember going to a restaurant and having some oysters and a glass of wine before going to an event later that night feeling a little out of place because bringing this new Janet to new territory was scary and awkward.

when I left the restaurant and I was walking around, trying to find the bus stop to my airbnb a woman drove by hollering at me.

it was the woman sitting next to me at the restaurant, and she said that she loved what I was wearing, and I remembered admiring her sunglasses, white cropped top and cargo pants and she wanted to give me a ride to my next destination.

we stayed in touch and she showed me some of her designs that she was putting together.

And we’ve continued to stay in touch, and I’m excited for her to launch her collection and cheering her on.

And that’s why it’s so important to bring the outside in the inside to who you are. because it’s the unknown opportunity and the connections you’ll make that will bring you closer to making a difference in what you do.

I am nostalgic and sentimental on my grandmas birthday.

We have our differences but I’m grateful for her influence in my own journey and what I do as a stylist and focusing on this future vision.

In my previous career as a customs broker (short lived) I went from being the girl sitting behind a desk to suddenly being in charge of people, metrics, client demands and more and all in a short amount of time and with no prior training.

Talk about being thrown into the fire. And having to figure out quickly how to show up to work via public transit commuting and a shift in my day to day style.

We went to the outlet mall the weekend before I started my new job as an account manager as a newly licensed customs broker at a 3rd party logistics company. She had me think about the commute, weather factors, logistics and practicality of my current wardrobe to fit into my new role.

I showed her some ideas and wrote a list of what I had and we went to the mall together. My grandma let me choose the places to look and she would help guide in fit and the quality of the fabric.

Of the few pieces I got that day it was a black trench coat that she recommended unequivocally to get. It was easy to throw on, lightweight, layers with other pieces nicely and looks chic and polished for someone going to a big job.

Because the last thing she wanted was for me to be underdressed and make a bad impression.

So Valentine’s Day also is an homage to my grandma, her birthday, and for showing me over and over it wasn’t about always buying new pieces first - it was working with what you have and then building on that for the future me.

Because if you start within you won’t feel as overwhelmed and in over your head.

Who would the person you want to be in this next chapter look like?

Because when you’re on a journey with a vision to be extraordinary, worthy, seen and valued it’s more than the technical skills and body of work you bring to the table.

It’s about you. What makes you unique? Who is this person stepping into the role? Who do they want to be seen as? What colors do you wear? What would you wear? And how can your style enhance the image of your identity?

Because your style is more than cute black dresses or what’s trendy.

You are on a mission. Whether it’s another promotion, career change or stepping into the workforce again after a transition period starting with your style and the image it carries can make an impact.

Maybe there’s someone’s style you admire or an iconic figure or celebrity.

So how do you start?

Let’s go on a journey to see what our self discovery style looks like and take us.

Because what better way to save all of your inspiration than in a book so you can see where your exploration takes you, put them into action, and continue to see how your image evolves and lets you be the person in this chapter?

Start by gathering all your inspirations - maybe magazine clippings of styles or wardrobes that made you stop and think “I want to try that.” Or a cool pattern or texture you know doesn’t exist in your closet. Maybe you saw an outfit that had you exclaiming “That’s me!”

Endings and beginnings.

To really take the time to know yourself, and discover who you are, bring your voice and your ideas out in a vast world and step out and show the world who you really are is an ongoing journey.

I started out in wardrobe styling in 2018 officially with the idea of wanting to work in the commercial and one on one setting. And then to realize in 2020 and 2021 I wanted to bring a unique perspective to personal styling - one where we look at it from the lens of who we are becoming and discovering our style can embody that inside and outside of us.

Last year gave me an opportunity to slow down from the hectic pace of styling and working with clients to look inwards and explore my own style. To realize I missed colors, and lots of color. And that i wanted to bring more unique textures to my own aesthetic.

And at the same time it gave me an opportunity to see I could take all the things I love seeing and talking about an Instagram stories through YouTube, and being a talking head of sorts on people that I admire, and seeing how their style has changed and what I noticed and saw along with having a much more stronger voice and critical eye. that helped me realize that I wanted to post more on YouTube and share those thoughts with a larger audience.

Thanks to my amazing friends for inviting me to all these cool movie screenings turned on a💡 in my head and my sister for all the technical 🧙‍♀️ editing videos in and huge thanks to Marcello for the tech support so I didn’t feel behind. And I wouldn’t have come to a lot of these discoveries in my business and growth without and another creative Brooke.

and seriously a huge thank you to all the dancers and cool people I’ve met through “raving,” whether it was in the club, outside or wandering to the festival. so many of you inspired my work and helped me to become more bold.

Huge gratitude to the incredible and extraordinary ladies from Parlay House for coming to the Style For Self Discovery Style Board experience.

It was an amazing opportunity to host this workshop to teach women how they can use the style boards as the foundation to transform their style.

Women walked away from this experience gaining a clear understanding of who they are becoming in this next chapter of their journey.

These are a few highlights from the event and some photos.
-The women realized they needed to let their hair down more and build a wardrobe that allows them to have fun
-Other women found themselves drawn to more relaxed wardrobes as they come into a more comfortable place in their business

- And others wanted to lean into this iconic style as a result of being more social and being out more

Everyone had a chance to share about what inspirations, styles, and themes were part of their style board.

There's nothing amazing then seeing women embrace this vision of who they are and how their style is a big part of that image.

This workshop was designed to give attendees the foundation and the tools they can use to start building the style that captures their identity. And allowing the wardrobe to enhance and boost their self esteem and self confidence.

It was very encouraging and inspiring to hear women at the event tell me this was the knowledge they needed.

These are lifelong tools and knowledge you can use whenever you get stuck or when you go through another change.
And that's the beauty of Style for Self Discovery workshop experience.
It's more than clothes or getting dressed.

Sometimes a slight change of scenery helps switch up the algorithms and perspectives.
Fall is here. New seasons. The last quarter of the year. New stuff is coming. And some much needed revamped content, video clips, helpful tools to apply to your style is coming.
Grateful for a full summer and a nice long week spent in Montreal.
So grateful to all the strangers who let me take pics of their cool styles, ask them about their inspiration, mutek, hanging out unexpectedly with really cool people and hearing their stories of overcoming addiction, wandering around enjoying sunshine and feel rested.
