Heat warnings in the North Bay are a great reminder that older adults are more prone to dehydration, and it doesn't always show up as thirst.

A few things we like to remind families of:
-Offer water regularly, not just when someone says they're thirsty
-Watch for confusion or fatigue, which can be early signs of dehydration
-Light, breathable clothing and shaded outdoor time go a long way

Small habits make a big difference. If you're ever unsure what level of care or support your loved one needs day to day, we're always happy to talk it through.

We're wishing you all a happy Fourth of July!

There's something special about independence at every stage of life. Whether that means aging in place with the right support, or finding a community that gives a loved one a renewed sense of freedom and connection, we believe independence should never mean going it alone.

Wherever you're celebrating today, we hope it's filled with good company and maybe a slice of watermelon.

Summer trips and family gatherings have a way of putting things in perspective. When you only see a parent or grandparent a few times a year, changes can be easier to spot than they are for the family members seeing them every day.

So how do you know what's a normal part of aging versus something worth a closer look?

Often just part of getting older:
-Misplacing keys or glasses occasionally, then finding them
-Needing a bit more time to get up from a chair or climb stairs
-Preferring quieter gatherings over big, loud ones
-Repeating a story once in a while
-Going to bed earlier or napping more than they used to

Worth paying closer attention to:
-Noticeable weight loss, or a fridge with little food or mostly expired items
-Missed medications, doubled-up pills, or a confusing pill routine
-Unexplained bruises, or a new fear of falling
-Withdrawing from conversations or activities they used to enjoy
-Getting lost in familiar places, or repeating the same question

If something feels off, the best next step is usually just a conversation, not a decision. Ask gentle, open-ended questions. Loop in siblings or other family who saw the same visit. And if you want a second opinion on what you're noticing, we're always happy to talk it through with no pressure attached.

You know your family best. Trust that instinct.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we wanted to close it by talking about something we see affecting families all the time.

Loneliness and depression in older adults are significantly underrecognized — and the health impact is real. Faster cognitive decline, higher rates of depression, reduced vitality. And it often doesn't look the way families expect.

The good news is that connection is genuinely protective. The right community makes a difference most families don't see until they experience it firsthand.

If something in this resonated, we're always here to talk. Our service is completely free to families.
