Some time ago I had the pleasure of bumping in to Howard Sharpell inside of our local Costco. Now to most; the name does not ring any bells, but be assured, by the end of this anecdote, you’ll know who Mr. Sharpell is. Howard was a combat engineer during World War II and in December of 1944, during the second day of the Battle of the Bulge, he was captured by the Germans and became a POW, but that is not where his story ends.

At 91, he is truly a blessed individual and keeps busy by volunteering his time and wisdom, to a local support group for those who suffer with PTSD. During our brief interaction, I asked for an opportunity to have lunch with him in hopes of getting to know him more intimately. A few weeks later we had lunch and we were able to setup a simple photo session. I’m thankful to Howard for his kindness as most WWII vets are not open to being photographed. I encourage all to read the book on his life’s story “I Once Was” by Linda Dudik, Ph.D. Again, many thanks to Howard Sarpell, WWII-POW.
