Dear wormophiles,
We regret having to announce that the Sandpoint Worm Project has closed its doors. We poured a lot of heart and soul into this idea and we still believe that a program like this can succeed in this community. However, with the housing crisis that Sandpoint is currently experiencing, we find ourselves unable to continue this project. Maybe in the future, we'll be able to revive this program and give it another go, but until then, thank you for all of your support!

From Kiss the Ground-- "Our Earth is thriving because humanity is in balance with all living systems. Reverence and interconnection are the foundation of our relationship with nature. Our participation in ecosystem regeneration is restoring the health of soil, water, the atmosphere, and communities. Humans have embraced their role as caretakers of the planet and each other."

A conversation about ecology, soil, trees, and all the layers of the biology and living things that contribute to our existence.

Sandpoint's community-wide kitchen scrap composting program founded by We Love Worms, is seeking to expand its headquarters. We are looking to rent a place to locate a shed or shipping container (not the one pictured below) that has power and water available. It doesn't need to be a pretty space, the worms won't mind. Please email us at [email protected] if you are interested in helping. Thank you! -We Love Worms (Nick and Paige Belfry)

Recycling nutrients locally is a passion for us. With your help, we this week reached 2,000lbs of food scraps redirected from the landfill back into local soils. We're testing out the first batch of compost at the Sandpoint Community Garden this week, and can't wait to distribute this precious resource once there is a steady supply!

Look what we found out and about this week! Isn't it beautiful?

With your help, the Sandpoint Worm Project has successfully kept more than 1,300lbs of compostable materials out of landfills just since October! We've turned these kitchen trimmings into soil fertility. It's a great start, and we're excited to see how much we can accomplish together in the next 5 months!

We just got this in! It's a bassinet for our baby due in May. What's really great about this particular bassinet (called a Moses Basket, made by the Little Green Sheep) is that it's made from all natural materials! The sheets are cotton, the mattress is wool, and the basket is woven palm fronds. When this product reaches the end of it's useful life, all of its components are compostable and will be returned to the soil from whence it came. This product, and others like it, exemplifies the movement towards what is called a circular economy, in which products and the materials they are made from are recycled rather than wasted.

We Love Worms is feeling gratitude for the generous donation of reclaimed lumber we received last week. THANK YOU! With a few more supplies, we'll soon be ready to construct our aerated static pile bins and take our precomposting process to the next level. (We're still in need of 2" PVC and a small amount of metal roofing.)

Great news! We signed up so many new worm-loving members for the month of February that we had to order more buckets! We've been getting a lot of positive feedback, and we're looking forward to continuing the trend. Yay Sandpoint!

We Love Worms is still looking for a few good used construction materials!

Our goal is to complete our upcoming project using all re-purposed and recycled materials. Our new plant-matter recyling machine will itself be made of recycled parts! how cool is that?

Here's where we're relying on you: the amazingly kind and generous community members of the Sandpoint area. If you have some scraps laying around that maybe you don't know what to do with, then give this list a quick glance to see if we can help you figure out a purpose for them. If you have an item you'd like to donate, just write us a comment on this post, and we'll come haul it away for you and give it new life as part of a high tech, state of the art, nutrient-recycling machine!

**This list will be updated as donations are received**

2x4 lumber, 68' worth
1/2 plywood, 4 sheets worth
2" PVC: pipe, 12'
end caps: need 3
elbows: need 2
T (2" all around): need 1
120V 35cfm fan, maybe for an inflatable mattress or yard art
Plastic tote with lid
extension cord
cycle timer (capable of running the fan 2 minutes every hr)

Our heartfelt gratitude for any help, materials, or leads that come to us. We're so thrilled to be able to give back to this community in any way we can.
