Our field season is over and we are back in Cotonou. We were treated to bbq by Brian and Claire Shukan at the US ambassador’s residence. A wonderful meal and a great way to wrap up the seasoon.

Bolu Ajayi is the STP king of Saclo, having dug 133 STPs in 10 days! This data will allow us to model the spatial arrangement of settlement features and activities on the Atlantic Era component of the site.

Excavations within a small forêt sacrée have identified two small mounds and a ton of tiny iron slag fragments. We probably have an iron smithing context dating from around 800-1300 AD.

We are finding a lot of large potsherds in Unit 9. Hopefully starch grain analysis will shed light on diet in the early 18th century.
