Caregivers are in survival mode.

Not because they are weak. Because they are doing an enormous job, often alone, often without a break, and often without anyone asking how they are doing.

The caregivers who reach out before things become a crisis almost always wish they had made that call even sooner.

You do not have to wait for a crisis to reach out. Getting support early is not giving up. It is one of the wisest things a caregiver can do, for their loved one and for themselves. If you are in survival mode right now, we can help.

Caregiver Tip: Make a “Favorites” List for Mom or Dad

Sometimes it’s the little things that make a good day.

Keep a list of Mom or Dad’s favorites: their coffee order, favorite takeout, TV shows, music, places they like to go, snacks they love, or activities they enjoy.

Keep it on your phone and share it with siblings, family members, or anyone else who spends time with them.

The next time someone asks, “What should we do today?” or “What can I bring Mom?” you’ll have plenty of ideas ready to go. And everyone gets to know them a little better, too.

Managing your own busy schedule is difficult enough as it is. Trying to balance mom or dad’s doctors’ appointments on top of it? That’s when things can really begin to take a toll.

You worry that if you’re not there to accompany your loved one, you’re not getting the full story from them on their health. But, between coordinating time off, constant scheduling, and trying to stay informed on their condition, it’s easy to become overwhelmed with all the responsibility.

That’s where we come in.

Our Care Companions can accompany your loved one to appointments, help with paperwork, carry identification and insurance cards, and take detailed notes during visits. With permission, we can share those updates with designated family members or others they choose. Care Companions can also assist with scheduling future appointments, keeping calendars up to date, requesting or picking up prescription refills, and providing medication reminders.

Because you shouldn’t have to choose between being there for your loved one and keeping up with your own schedule.

Celebrating Centenarian’s Day by remembering one of our favorite centenarians, Laurie’s Grandma, Augustina (Gussie).

Gussie lived to be 100 years young and left behind a beautiful legacy of love, family, and a life well lived. Her influence is still felt today, including in the care and compassion Laurie brings to Daughter for Hire Saratoga.

If you are lucky enough to have a Centenarian in your life, give some love to them today! And here’s some love for you Gussie ❤️

Today is World Alzheimer's Day.

At Daughter for Hire, this day is personal. Many of the families we support are navigating the challenges of Alzheimer's and dementia every single day. We see the seniors living with it. We see the spouses and children caring for them. And we see the endurance it takes to show up for someone you love when the road is long and hard.

We see you and we are with you, today and every day.

Some of the most effective changes you can make to keep an aging loved one safe at home take an afternoon and cost very little. Here's where to start:

Remove rugs and clutter from walkways. Loose rugs are one of the leading causes of falls in the home. Remove them or secure them with non-slip backing. Clear pathways of anything that could catch a foot.

Improve the lighting. Older eyes need more light than younger ones. Add nightlights in hallways, the bathroom, and the bedroom. Make sure light switches are easy to reach before entering a dark room.

Move frequently used items within easy reach. Things stored too high or too low require reaching and bending that can throw off balance. Reorganize kitchen cabinets and closets so the everyday essentials are right at hand.

Add grab bars in the bathroom. The bathroom is where many falls happen. Grab bars near the toilet and inside the shower or tub provide support at the moments they're needed most. These are inexpensive and straightforward to install.

None of these changes signal that something is wrong. They simply make a home work better for the person living in it.

When families first reach out to Daughter for Hire, they often come with a list. Days they need help. Tasks that have to get done. Times that work. And we take all of that seriously.

But what we are really listening for is something deeper. What does your loved one enjoy? What is their morning like? What makes them comfortable and what makes them anxious? What does a good day look like for them and how can we help more of those happen?

Every family we support gets something different because every family is different. Some need a Care Companion a few hours a week.

Others need someone there around the clock. Some need help with meals and transportation. Others need companionship. We build the support around the person, not the other way around.

Our Care Companions are carefully chosen because we know how important that relationship is to a family. We look for people who bring experience, reliability, warmth, and a genuine desire to make a difference in someone’s day. Our goal is to introduce families to Care Companions who feel like the kind of person you would be happy to have in your home and in your loved one’s life.

And once that relationship is built, it lasts. Many of our Care Companions have been with families in this community for years. They aren’t strangers who show up and clock in. They are trusted, familiar faces who feel like part of the family.

The surgery went well. Rehab is done. And now your loved one is back home, which is exactly where they wanted to be. But home looks a little different than it did before. The stairs feel steeper. Getting in and out of bed takes longer. Bending down to pick something up is out of the question. And the list of post procedure instructions from the doctor is a little overwhelming.

This is the window of time where having the right support at home can make a huge difference.

If you are in this situation, our Care Companions can be there from day one of coming home. Here’s how we help during recovery.

Meals: Preparing healthy meals on a regular schedule so that healing can happen and energy stays up.

Medication reminders: Gentle, consistent reminders to take the right medications at the right times, exactly as prescribed.

Transportation: Getting to and from follow up appointments safely without relying on family members to rearrange their schedules every time.

Safety and reassurance: A familiar, trusted presence in the home so that your loved one is never navigating the hard moments alone.

Light housekeeping: Keeping the home clean and organized so that recovery can happen in a comfortable, safe environment.

Recovery takes time. Having someone consistently there, someone who knows your loved one and genuinely cares about how they are doing, makes that time easier for everyone.
