Cichlids and Herps Unlimited LLC is a company that imports and breeds African Cichlids and other reptiles. We also maintain a large stock of fish year-round; however, some species are seasonal and/or sporadic breeders and juveniles may not be available all year. Spring and summer are the prime hatching times for our reptiles, and they are made available as soon as they are eating well and can handle the transition to a new home.

Neolamprologus calliurus “Kasanga” girls!

Just a few words about these ladies and the effort to collect them….I have imported wild Kasanga Calliurus at least 5 times since 1999. Close to 200 individual fish-100% males. Always assured there were females in each batch. Never were-so I started turning down these fish when offered. A few have recently popped up from the Kigoma area, but IM0 the Kasanga variant is the best looking. A few f-1 are occasionally offered from Europe (our current breeders are European), but not commonly. It’s an easy to breed fish and very prolific, so there should be plenty on the market if they are a normal collection fish. The reason they are not commonly available is most likely because females are so hard to get, not because of lack of interest. So, when I was offered more for the recent shipment, the discussion was around securing enough females to go with the males. The first pics of the fresh fish were all males (not surprising). More discussion and some advice on how to find females was given. Here we have departure from most of the “exporters” in Tanzania….Chacha listened to that advice coming from 8000 miles on the other side of the planet, sent his team back, and successfully found the females. That is a true partnership. Success for both partners and worthy of being praised for going above and beyond. It was not the normal collection of sweeping up fish and being content. It took extra effort and for that I am very grateful. To the exporter who arrogantly posted on his page today that collecting females was “just a normal collection” you are a 🤡. Your team collected after Chacha’s team; Hmm, maybe they heard about the advice for collecting. My advice to you….you should wonder why you have lost so many USA customers (could be poor packing; bad ratios; dead fish- and yes, I have personal experience with you) or maybe you are just so arrogant no one wants to deal with you.

The trip to Dar begins. Export to USA around August 18 (as long as the airlines cooperate).

We must again express our appreciation to Chacha Martine, who went above and beyond to collect female Calliurus. This fish is one of the hardest to import with any females. We have tried it multiple times and only received males. The size difference is pronounced - similar to Callipterus. We won’t have extra females, but we should be able to do 1:1 ratio.
