Eastern Trail "Gap" Nearly Complete & Set to Open in August

More than a year ahead of its construction schedule estimate, the 1.6-mile “Close the Gap” section of the Eastern Trail is anticipated to open to the public in August. Shaw Brothers is completing work on guardrails and other final installations before the trail is safe to open.

The trail segment connects Wainwright Sports Complex in South Portland to the Nonesuch River crossing (off Eastern Road extension) in Scarborough and includes two new bridges. Construction on the Close the Gap project began in June 2025. The trail remains closed at this time as final components are completed—stay tuned for more information on the official opening next month.
