What kind of baby carrier should you have on your registry? And why!

With a lifetime of baby-wearing underwear, my belt, I think even the perfect minimalist baby registry should have TWO specific carriers on it.

1) Wrap carrier - Moby 100% Cotton is my favorite, but they really are all the same! Comes down to fabric composition and color preference. For the early weeks of learning how to move around the house and bond with your baby at the same time. They find the most comfort being right there with you.

The ability to go hands-free in those first 12 weeks is essential when every waking moment consists of tending to your brand-new baby. Taking your inconsolable 3-week-old and wrapping them skin to skin on your chest while still being able to make yourself a snack? Invaluable.

2) Ergo Omni Classic (formerly Ergo 360) https://ergobaby.com/en-us/products/omni-classic-baby-carrier?variant=51321211683104

I have tried many baby carriers, and nothing beats the comfort that Ergo provides for YOU, the wearer. With so many "luxury" brands available in adorable colors/patterns, it's so hard to determine if that high ticket price means high-ticket comfort (spoiler: it doesn't). So before you splurge, let me point you to the carrier that does it all, forward and rear-facing, front and back wearing, and even a hip carry position because yes, you can baby-wear a toddler!

If you live anywhere outside of Portland, then sidewalks are hard to come by, and you may find most of the places you like to walk are not stroller-friendly. This is where your baby carrier shines. Eventually, when your child grows out of it, you will be hunting down the next best hiking backpack to keep the adventures going!

If you need help building your registry, I offer the service as an add-on to my postpartum in-home support. Let’s get you all set up BEFORE baby arrives. With Sacred Cradle, you can have more than one way to go hands-free in your fourth trimester.

🍂 As the AC Goes Back to the Basement... Don't Forget to breakout the White Noise Machine

Whether you are ready or not, Summer is winding down here in Maine and Fall is approaching (yay!) - which means all those window units that have been quietly running (and doubling as white noise) are about to get packed away for the season.

If you've got a newborn on the way or already home, this is your reminder: a white noise machine isn't optional if you want your baby's sleep to be optimal.

White noise:

-Mimics the sound of the womb - the baby's most familiar environment

-Masks the household. Creaky floors, siblings footsteps, the dog barking - anything that will grab your newborns attention while they are in between sleep cycles

-Allows you to recreate a familiar sleep environment on the go.

There are so many white noise machines available to you from the Hatch (red light included) to the DOHM (real fan noise), to list a few of my favorites!

Save this before you pack away that fan — and share with a friend setting up her nursery!

Books! Books! and more Books!

Behind every consult call, overnight shift, postpartum visit, nursery setup, and home-cooked meal is countless hours spent learning. Every chapter, every workshop, every training, but most importantly, every family teaches me something new. No literature can beat the hands-on experience of nurturing a brand-new baby, and I am so grateful for each and every family that has ever entrusted me during their postpartum period.

I love, love, love this work and will continue to build my library and apply all I can to provide the most unique and specialized care to each unique and special baby!

Bone Broth & the Fourth Trimester 🍲🤍

One of my favorite staples for postpartum recovery is homemade bone broth. It's nourishing, versatile, and can be prepared well before baby arrives.

For lactation 🤱
💧 A delicious source of hydration and electrolytes
🥣 Naturally rich in minerals
🥩 A source of protein

For healing 💆‍♀️
🌿 Warm, easy-to-digest foods promote blood flow for postpartum recovery
✨ Contains collagen-derived proteins and amino acids that support your body's natural healing process

The best part? Bone broth can be made months in advance and frozen without losing its nutritional value. Sip it on its own, or use it as a flavorful base for soups, rice, vegetables, meats, and casseroles.

It's the very first thing I prepare for families who book my postpartum meal service. From there, it becomes the foundation for many of the nourishing meals I stock in their freezer. Everything is prepared with organic ingredients and frozen in individual portions, making it easy to grab and go even with a baby strapped to your chest.

Share with someone you know who might be needing a little inspiration for their postpartum kitchen!

Hi!

I'm Karlie - the owner of Sacred Cradle Perinatal Care located here in Southern Maine. I have spent the last year completing online course certifications as well as hands-on training through mentorship to become a certified Postpartum Doula and Newborn Care Specialist. This past year, I have supported 7 families with both overnight newborn care and daytime doula help. I bring confidence and experience with babies as young as 3 days old as well as multiples!

Prior to becoming a PPD I spent 6 years as a private Nanny to over 12 children under the age of 5. Six of those children were under the age of 2 and several overall which required specialized or unique care.

I truly shine both in the nursery and in the kitchen. I have a passion for healing and fueling the body through food and a lifetime of experience in the holistic community. I have a deep understanding of the needs of a new mother and what it means to come together - be the village - and raise the next generation.

I want to help new families feel confident and supported when they bring their new baby home. I want to answer their questions, stock their freezers, and give them full nights of sleep from the moment they step into their home and build a cradle that is so sacred for their little ones.
