A single houseplant is not one plant — it’s a mother colony. Most trailing vines, offsets, and leggy stems are new plants that just need a glass of water and a windowsill.

- Pothos — cut a six-inch vine below a node, one leaf minimum, roots appear in two to four weeks
- Spider plant — snip a spiderette at the nub where it connects to the runner, set it in shallow water, roots in one to two weeks
- Monstera — cut below a node where an aerial root is already forming, roots develop in three to six weeks
- Tradescantia — one of the fastest houseplant rooters, visible roots in under a week, hard to get wrong
- Heartleaf philodendron — cut below a node, remove the lowest leaf, roots in about two weeks

Syngonium, coleus, cane begonia, English ivy, lucky bamboo, dracaena, and pilea all root the same way — cut below a node, keep the leaves above water, refresh weekly.

Most plants you own already want to multiply — a jar of water is all the permission they need.
