Empathy is one of the most important lessons you must learn as a leader.

Unfortunately, for too many of us, it takes us going through the experience, the disruption, tragedy, or adversity to genuinely understand. Or, we can only empathize with people who look like us, act like us, and pray like us.

When I was a manager in my early 20s, it was difficult for me to understand the plight of my colleagues who were parents and why they couldn’t work till ten at night or travel 80% of the time like me. But now that I’m a parent, I understand intimately the struggles that parents face in the corporate world. I see you, moms and dads!

But now that I know better, I do better.

However, we as leaders must bridge the gap, even when we can’t walk in their shoes. For example, I will never know what it’s like to be a man, which means I have to use my eyes, ears, and heart more to empathize with my colleagues. I have to ask more questions. I need to pause to listen. I need to widen my network of connections and friendships so that it’s not one monolithic viewpoint.

As AI, automation, and technology takeover many tasks, let us not forget what makes us human:

- the ability to relate
- be curious
- listen
- sympathize
- and be kind

The soul of a company is its people. It always has been. Let us remember that. Let us not forget that it’s okay to be human, have feelings, and allow others to do the same.

Empathy is a superpower.

It helps you be a better worker, boss, client, spouse, friend, parent, and so on.

Today’s “clout chasing culture” has deceived so many modern leaders into chasing the “bags” and “titles” they believe define success.

These have unfortunately missed the prize of delivering on their God-given purpose, and authentically adding value by transforming the communities they were called to serve.
