Today on National Entrepreneurs’ Day, we’re celebrating the business owners who turn ideas into jobs, teams, and thriving communities.
Our CEO & Founder, Jason Roth, wrote a special message about his journey, what entrepreneurship means to him, and why he’s grateful for the clients who trust Payroll Experts. Read his letter below ✉️:
"From the time I was 9 years old “borrowing” my family’s lawnmower and going door to door charging $5-$10 a lawn (priced by square footage and how guilty I felt 😄), I’ve pretty much known I was wired to be an entrepreneur. Today, I’m the founder and CEO of two companies. While the tools have evolved a bit since that lawnmower, the mindset really hasn’t changed.
Along the way I’ve worn a lot of name badges: fry cook, retail associate, mover, roadie for a wedding band, employee at a large insurance company, arena staff at the Knickerbocker in Albany, and later, team member at a startup payroll service in Miami. In every role, I was that person asking “Why do we do it this way?” and “What if we tried this instead?” Sometimes that made me an innovator. Sometimes it probably made me annoying. But that curiosity and willingness to take risks for a better client and employee experience became the foundation of how I lead today.
The entrepreneurial journey has not been a straight line. There have been windfalls and there have been gut-punch losses. I’ve worked more long days, late nights, and weekends than I can count. But I’ve also had the privilege of building a company where I get to work with amazing people who bring different skills, experiences, and styles to the table - all aligned by shared core values and a genuine desire to do right by our clients and by each other.
If there’s one phrase that has anchored me through the highest highs and the lowest lows, it’s this: “This too shall pass.” Wins are worth celebrating, but you can’t rest on them. Losses are worth learning from, but you can’t live in them. Business (and life) keeps moving, and so must we.
I’m still very much on the journey, not at the finish line. But if my 9-year-old self with a borrowed lawnmower could see this chapter, I think he’d smile, and then probably try to upsell me on edging the driveway."
