Medicare vs. Medicaid: do you know the difference? They sound similar, but they're very different programs. Here's a quick breakdown: 👇

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people 65 and older, as well as some younger individuals with disabilities. It covers hospital stays, doctor visits, and prescription drugs, among other services.

Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that provides health coverage to people with limited income and resources. Eligibility and benefits vary by state. Medicaid can cover housing costs but does not cover 24/7 in-home care.

Navigating these programs can be genuinely confusing, especially when you're also managing a loved one's health and wellbeing. If you're not sure which program applies to your situation or how to make the most of your coverage, I'm here to help. It's difficult to know when it's time to enlist help for an aging relative, whether it's in-home care, mobility devices, or a different living situation. Knowing what to look out before it happens can make these transitions easier:

1. Your loved one is seeing multiple providers but no one is looking at the big picture. Details can fall through the cracks, and differing guidance can cause a lot of added stress.

2. Your loved one has had a recent fall and it's become clear that their living situation is no longer safe for them. If you've talked about options for this type of situation, it can ease the transition out of their current home.

3. Your loved one is struggling to manage their medications, appointments, and/or paperwork. This can be potentially dangerous and shouldn't be taken lightly.

4. You're fielding calls from doctors, insurance companies, and care facilities and it is becoming overwhelming. Complex health situations require more than one person to manage. You can't (and don't have to!) do it all yourself.

The BCPA credential assures that your patient advocate upholds these values:

-Your autonomy to make your own health decisions. Advocates cannot give medical advice, and are not there to tell you what to do.

-Your right to privacy and confidentiality in regards to your medical information. Advocates should always follow HIPAA guidelines.

-The commitment to helping you obtain the medical services you need. This is the main role advocates play; making sure you receive the medical care you need, when you need it, and ensuring you have all the relevant information and resources at your disposal.

We would argue that it's never too early to talk about end-of-life wishes. You'll be so glad you have certain information when you need it, such as your parent or love one's preferences around what lifesaving measures they want, burial and funeral wishes, and of course, distribution of assets. Having the right documents in place when the time comes makes a world of difference from having to navigate all the logistics around death in a moment of grief and shock.

It's a difficult conversation to start, but we are here to support you through it if you need guidance. ❤️

It can be hard to fully understand the mental load of caregiving unless you've been in the thick of it. Making appointments, managing prescriptions, tracking symptoms, research, finances, and all of that on top of the emotional toll AND balancing your own life and family.

Reaching out to a patient advocate can help alleviate some of the stress. We handle all the not-so-fun logistical tasks, help you get organized and make sure you are fully informed of your (or your loved one's) health situation and available resources.
