A dead tree can still help a forest recover.

After the 2021 Poverty Flats Fire, much of the Gentry Ranch was left covered in fire-killed trees. Years later, many of those trees are still standing, while others have snapped under wind and winter weather.

In this photo, a planter is intentionally placing a new ponderosa pine seedling at the base of one of those standing dead trees.

The snag can give the young seedling a better shot at establishment: providing shade during hot summer months, helping water collect nearby, and offering some protection from hungry wildlife.

It’s a small detail, but one that speaks to the complexity of restoring a forest after wildfire. The burned wood doesn’t simply disappear when the flames are out.

At the Gentry Ranch, some of that fire-killed biomass was put to work through Mast’s biomass burial project, helping finance the planting of thousands of locally adapted seedlings across the property.

At Company, watching life break through the soil never gets old.

While its neighbors have already dropped their seedcoats and fully extended their needles, this little pine seedling is still in what we call the “birdcage” stage.

Before a seedling opens up to embrace the sun, the seedcoat often holds the tips of the newly emerging needles together, forming a delicate, cage-like structure. As the seedling grows stronger, it will naturally shed this outer shell and expand its canopy.

Every giant forest starts with small, deliberate wonders like this one.

How does a 100+ year carbon removal project stay protected if the original developer is acquired, restructures, or no longer exists?

Fair question. None of those changes should end the responsibility to monitor, maintain, and protect the stored carbon.

Mast created a dedicated long-term stewardship fund for MT1. The endowment ensures there is support for the monitoring, reporting, verification, equipment replacement, site inspections, repairs, and potential reversal obligations across the project’s 100-year life.

For buyers, this creates continuity beyond our team today.

A durability claim should not depend on the developer remaining unchanged for a century. It should be backed by funding and legal protections designed to keep the project accountable over time.

We’ve never been so excited to watch grass grow. 🌱

At MT1, fire-killed trees were removed, biomass was durably stored, and the site was restored and reseeded—all in less than half a year.

Now, grasses are growing back. Wildlife is returning. And the project is disappearing back into the landscape.

That’s the point: leave as little trace as possible, and leave the land better than we found it.

Wildfire preparation should start well before there is smoke in the air.

This year’s wildfire outlook shows elevated risk across much of the West with low snowpack, drought, and early-season heat.

For landowners preparation also means planning for recovery. After severe wildfires, many forests are unable to recover naturally, which means ensuring local seed is available, and knowing who can help restore these burned landscapes in a timely post-fire window.

The fact that we had the right ponderosa seed banked enabled us to plant a year earlier at MT1.

Ways you can prepare now:

It’s carbon monitoring in action.

Pictured here are Mast’s Geoff (left) and Tiffani (right) collecting gas samples from the top of our biomass burial chamber at MT1. These samples are sent to the lab to measure methane and carbon dioxide, helping our team understand how the chamber is performing and how the engineered cap is functioning.
