2.4 million acres have already burned in the U.S. this year—an area larger than Puerto Rico and nearly double the 10-year average for this point in the season.

Experts are pointing to low snowpack and widespread drought, and warning of elevated wildfire risk across much of the West.

Those forecasts are hitting home for many landowners facing the question: What happens if my forest burns?

Recovery can be complicated, but there are steps you can take now to be prepared:
🌲Bank your tree seed ahead of time. Connect with Silvaseed Nursery and Cal Forest Nurseries to understand seed supply, collection, testing, and growing timelines.
🌲Work with companies like Firebreak Management in Montana to reduce fuel loads and prepare your properties with a buffer zone.
🌲Support or host carbon projects on your property that both reduce wildfire risks and accelerate post-fire reforestation.

Donna joined Silvaseed in 1994 and has been a keystone member of the team ever since.

Her love language? Strong seed lots.

Donna has spent years working at the gravity table, where hollow seeds are separated from full seeds, helping give each future seedling its best possible start. She also supports work across the nursery, including outplanting seedlings to the bareroot field, pictured here.

The wildfire spared little.

Here in eastern Montana, the Poverty Flats Fire killed 70- to 100-year-old ponderosa pines and left the hardest-hit areas too far from surviving trees to regenerate on their own.

But this seedling is a sign of what comes next.

It is one of 6,500 locally adapted ponderosa pine seedlings planted at Gentry Ranch, grown from seed collected for this landscape.

Reforestation was funded by Mast’s burial of 10 million pounds of burned, dead trees in an engineered underground chamber designed for long-term carbon storage.

One day, these seedlings may grow into mature ponderosas, known by foresters as “yellow-bellies” for their golden bark—the towering, butterscotch-smelling giants this landscape has known for generations.

Wildfire preparation should start well before there is smoke in the air.

This year’s wildfire outlook shows elevated risk across much of the West with low snowpack, drought, and early-season heat.

For landowners preparation also means planning for recovery. After severe wildfires, many forests are unable to recover naturally, which means ensuring local seed is available, and knowing who can help restore these burned landscapes in a timely post-fire window.

The fact that we had the right ponderosa seed banked enabled us to plant a year earlier at MT1.

Ways you can prepare now:

Even with sleet in the air and 30 mph winds whipping across the ranch, we still got our “family” photo.

This spring, MT1 landowners Velma (center) and Rebecca Gentry (left center) helped welcome ponderosa pine seedlings home to land burned by the 2021 Poverty Flats Fire.

6,500 seedlings planted in two days. A new generation of ponderosa pine taking root. 🌲

At Mast’s MT1 project in eastern Montana, Mast forester, Julian, helped guide MT1 landowner as she planted a few ponderosa pine seedlings by hand.

He looked for the right mix of shade, soil, and competing vegetation, the small field decisions that can help give each seedling its best chance.

After the 2020 Beachie Creek Fire, natural recovery at Henry Creek was unlikely.

That’s why Mast partnered with EFM and to restore the land by drone and by hand.

Carbon finance support from , , and other buyers helped fund the work.

Today, we’re celebrating the project’s first successful credit verification and delivery. 🌲

Welcome to Silvaseed!

Today is our first day on Instagram but we’ve actually been around for 155 years. We’re the largest privately run conifer seed bank west of the Mississippi. Our team has been collecting cones, processing seeds, and growing seedlings to conserve the West’s iconic conifers.

We serve customers in our backyard around Roy, WA and as far as away as Germany.
