♦️ Ancestral Threads by Bilonda Mireille Rommel () is on display near the corner of Thomas St and Boren Ave N in South Lake Union!
🎨 Bilonda Mireille Rommel is a Congolese-born visual artist based in Seattle whose practice explores heritage, storytelling, and cultural memory through vivid oil and acrylic paintings. Born and raised in Kinshasa—the vibrant capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, home to over 200 ethnic groups—she channels her homeland’s spirit through bold forms, layered symbolism, and expressive color palettes that reflect ancestral wisdom and cultural resilience. Drawing from her Luba heritage as well as Kuba, Kongo, and other Congolese traditions, Rommel employs geometric patterns, vibrant textiles, and ceremonial influences to create a visual language honoring tradition while inviting contemporary reflection. Guided by oral traditions, music, and lived experience, she approaches painting as visual journaling—a way to process, preserve, and share the histories that shape her. Her abstract realist style sparks dialogue across Black American, Indigenous, Latina, and other communities, embracing parallel experiences of strength and survival, making her art a bridge between African and American narratives celebrating shared beauty and legacy throughout the diaspora.
