Your business didn’t just end up where it is today.

The choices you made, avoided, or put off all played a part in getting it here.

And that’s actually good news. Because if your choices helped shape where your business is today, different choices can shape where it goes next.

You built it. You can rebuild it.

I've seen leaders jump straight to defensiveness the moment someone speaks up. But pause for a second.

Why are they speaking up in the first place?

Most people don't give difficult feedback because they want conflict. They give it because they care. They want the team, the business, or you to be better.

The feedback that feels hardest to hear may be the feedback you need most.

Psychological safety isn't built by saying, "My door is always open."

It's built by showing your team how you respond when the truth is uncomfortable.

One of my favorite places to learn leadership lessons is on a mountain bike.

Sometimes another rider points out something you thought you were doing right.

Your first reaction might be, Who are you to tell me how to ride?

But then you remember why they're speaking up.

Because they care. They want to help you improve and make sure you get home safely.

The workplace isn't that different. Before you get defensive, choose curiosity.

The feedback that's hardest to hear is often given by the people most invested in your success.

You create the dynamic of your team.

You can say you want honesty. You can say your door is always open. You can say you want people to speak up.

But what happens when they actually do?

Psychological safety isn’t built by what you say you value. It’s built by how you respond when someone challenges you, disagrees with you, or gives you feedback you don’t want to hear.

So ask yourself: What are you saying vs. what are you showing your team?

We’ve probably all experienced this at some point in our careers.

A leader says they want honesty. They want feedback. They want people to speak up.

Then someone does, and their response tells a completely different story.

Remember how that made you feel?

Whether you’re leading a team now or hope to someday, remember what it felt like to be on the other side of that dynamic.

Ask yourself: Are you creating the environment you once wished you had?

Every trail teaches a lesson.

This one reminded me that the biggest obstacles aren't always in front of us. Sometimes they're the ones we've created in our own minds.

"Before the climb, we think the mountain is the obstacle. At the top, we realize the only obstacle was ourselves."

Reflect: What's one challenge you've realized was more about mindset than reality?

Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.

As your business evolves, your leadership has to evolve with it.

The founder who started the business isn't usually the leader who can scale it. Great leaders recognize when it's time to grow alongside their business.

Scaling a business requires more than growing revenue.

It requires growing as a leader.

John P. Kotter's research reminds us that leadership is about embracing change, not protecting the status quo.

The founder who starts the business isn't always the leader who scales it. The best leaders evolve alongside their business.
