So many times the bride and groom don't disclose the wedding night location. Well, this may very well have come from a French tradition called Chiverie in which it is expected that there will be a wedding-night prank of clanging pots to interrupt the nuptial couple; the groom must invite the mischief makers in for refreshments.

I am pretty sure that my husband would not have let anyone in for refreshments on our wedding night. :)

Have you ever wondered where the tradition of throwing rice (we now use bird seed or bubbles) as the bride and groom leave for the honeymoon came from?

This is a tradition that is woven throughout many different social wedding tradition in that it isn't from one country it is from many.

The tradition is a symbol of fertility.

It comes from a time period where marriage wasn't for love, it was a union of two families or a union of "nation-building" (as in the Jewish tradition to name just one with that focus). The hope was that this couple would produce children and grow the nation more or bless a family with heirs. Only recently has marriage been seen as a symbol of strictly love with no other reason.

Tasting of the Spices tradition commonly performed at African-American traditional weddings has four lesson sections designed to help couples understand four major points of marriage:

Bitter Herb: Bitterness that life can bring. This bitter herb helps each couple to be wise and sidestep all those bitter emotions. It gives knowledge to solve problems and to incorporate life experiences in everyday survival.

Water: Represents the abundance of life and the blessings of life. It quenches our thirst, refreshes our bodies, cleanses and is sacred. Water floods the home with an abundance of happiness, health and wealth.

Honey: Brings happiness. The taste is to help the sweetness of marriage continue to spread. Reminds one to have sweet words.

Pepper: Spice of life. “May you have enough pepper to keep your marriage spicy but not so much that the passion singes.”

I especially like the last two. :)
