Blacc Sam opened a rec center for the kids of Crenshaw last week, and he put it in the same parking lot where his little brother used to sell mixtapes out the trunk.

His little brother was Nipsey Hussle.

Inside there's a gym with a court, a music academy, a run club, a barbershop and a whole section built around Crenshaw High basketball. Foot Locker and Nike put up the money. Sam and The Marathon brand decided what went in it. And the jobs behind that counter go to folks who live right around there.

That lot is the whole reason it means something. Nipsey stood in it back in 2014 and said it himself. This parking lot, it was originally our block.

Police ran the brothers off that corner for years. Raided the shops, took the shirts, shut them down. So they bought the building. The owner handed them the keys instead of caving to the pressure to put them out.

Opening day Sam stood in that same lot and said it plain. As kids, we used to be in this parking lot.

The lot that used to get raided is the one handing out jobs now.

Jennine Labuzan would not sign one piece of paper, so a federal judge sent the U.S. Marshals for her. She spent two weeks in a jail cell this year. She was never charged with a crime.

She started digging into her family tree after years of hearing relatives say the names of people long gone. The search turned up federal records showing her third great grandfather, Charles Augustus Labuzan, bought into 1,361 acres in Washington County, Mississippi with two partners in 1836. The patent says the land goes to heirs and assigns forever.

She filed her petition in 2022 and she has represented herself the whole way.

The courts ruled against her at every level, up to the Supreme Court, which would not hear it. A judge ordered her to sign a quitclaim deed giving up her claim. She said no, and the judge held her in contempt.

They moved her from Georgia to Tennessee to Mississippi. She went in on June 5. She came out on June 23 and she still had not signed. The judge signed the land away without her.

She has another case running over 94 acres of that same land. In July a judge let it move forward.

"I've never had more than a speeding ticket, let alone jail."

She popped up on her dad on Mother's Day. Life ain't been easy on him, and she said it herself: no matter what, that's still her daddy.

She didn't pull up to fix anything. She pulled up so he could be the one to tell her happy Mother's Day.

Hug your people while you can.

Xavier Leathers is 12 years old. Early Saturday morning in Prince George's County, Maryland, he was asleep on the couch when he heard his mother's boyfriend come in and start choking her.

He said something in his body told him he had to move right then. The man got two good hits on him before he could get past to the kitchen. He went anyway, grabbed what he could find, came back and st@bbed him twice.

His mama didn't know any of that while it was happening. All she knew was that the man on top of her suddenly let go. She found out why when she overheard the police saying he had been st@bbed, and her first thought was that her son was in trouble. They told her he was fine. He was defending her.

The man was taken into custody. She went to the hospital, then filed for a protective order.

"The police told me I did a good job. I saved my mother's life, and I should never have been put in that situation to begin with."

Kahh Spence spent over a decade doing hair for Kelly Rowland, Cardi B, Kehlani, Normani and Victoria Monét. Everybody figured his own business would be haircare. He said he didn't have anything valuable to say in haircare yet.

He made a perfume instead. He named it Samir Grey after his middle name and his favorite color, and he built it for his mama.

Her name was Sharisee. She died of colon cancer in 2017. She was in a wheelchair at the end. They were all supposed to go to Hawaii together, Kehlani was going to fly her out for a show, and it never happened.

What he told the perfumer was that he wanted it to smell like his last dream of her. The two of them walking on a beach. "My mom was in a wheelchair when she passed. So us walking really meant a lot."

He didn't call in any favors when he launched it. He wanted the thing to stand on its own.

In April, Tina Knowles posted a video of Kelly Rowland getting her hair done with the bottle sitting in frame. Two weeks of inventory was gone in two hours. It stayed sold out for five weeks.

Over $500,000 so far. His first fragrance brand, back in 2019, he started with the lottery money his mother left him.

A fire tore through Sand Branch, Texas on Saturday night and burned 10 acres. There was not one fire hydrant in the whole community, so when the flames came back up, neighbors went at them with the plastic bottles of drinking water they keep in the house. Nothing has come out of the taps in Sand Branch since the 1980s.

That bottled water is not for emergencies. It is all they have. Sand Branch was founded after the Civil War as a refuge for people freed from slavery, and it is the last unincorporated community left in Dallas County. Its wells were condemned in the 1980s after they tested positive for E. coli, and the hundred or so people still there have gotten by on bottles for drinking, cooking and bathing ever since. Forty-one years. The city's wastewater treatment plant sits 400 feet away.

The water that finally put the fire out had to be trucked in from Dallas and nine other departments. It took until Monday. It was the third fire in Sand Branch in two weeks.

Derek Avery runs the coalition fighting to get pipes into those homes.

"We have a fire that should have been put out in an hour."

Tedrick Washington Jr. is 23, from Blytheville, Arkansas. He played Division 1 basketball at Southeast Missouri State and Chattanooga.

On August 19 he was riding in the backseat of an Infiniti when the driver took off from Arkansas State Police. The chase hit 130 miles an hour before spike strips and a PIT maneuver ended it in a residential neighborhood. Washington wasn't driving.

Dashcam shows him in the backseat with both hands up. The trooper, Theodore Henderson, broke the rear window with his baton and told him to climb out through it. Washington says he couldn't get the door open. Henderson grabbed his arm and his locs, pulled him through the opening, and punched him in the face. Then hit him again on the ground.

In his report, Henderson wrote that Washington "postured up."

The driver got charged with felony fleeing and DWI. The other passenger in that same car was released without anything. Washington is the one facing obstruction and resisting arrest.

Three weeks before this, another Arkansas trooper was recorded punching an 18-year-old girl in the face at a stop in the same county. She's suing.

Nobody has been disciplined for either one.

Stormi Steele is from a town in Mississippi she describes as having no stoplight. She was 23 credit hours from an art degree with a 3.7 GPA when she walked away from it to do hair.

She moved to Huntsville, Alabama with $800 and started mixing a hair serum in her kitchen. Cayenne pepper in it, for the tingle on the scalp. She gave it to her clients at the salon. They kept asking for more, so she started selling it.

Canvas Beauty launched in 2018 out of a 500 square foot warehouse. Year one it moved over a million units. Year two she opened a storefront in a strip mall.

Then in 2022 the whole thing nearly went under. She has said a chief financial officer she trusted forged her signature on predatory loans while she was on bed rest with a high risk pregnancy.

She rebuilt it by selling live on TikTok herself, four hours a day, her own face, her own account.

On June 8, 2024, she sold a million dollars of product in a single livestream. First person on the platform to ever do it. She did it again in September in half the time, and on Black Friday she hit the million in the first two hours and finished over three.

The warehouse is 30,000 square feet now.
