I had a small content writing business in the late 2010s. We would ghost-write blog posts and magazine articles for FinTech companies, primarily in the Asian and European region.

I ran this business alongside my full-time corporate job. I would spend my evenings and some Saturdays, working on articles. Meeting deadlines was crucial, and it involved a lot of coordination with editors and marketing to ensure content had the company’s brand voice and other tweaks completed on schedule.

At this time, it was just me. I was expected to create 3-4 articles per month for a single client.

It became clear to me that I needed to practice what I preach, and delegate.

I have to tell you about Frank (real name withheld).

He has a great business providing and installing stone finishes. He has a healthy pipeline of work because of the partnerships he has with many realtors and a few luxury home builders. He also sells his affordable stone finishes through local home improvement stores. His business is very successful.

What you don’t see is the inner workings of his business. His billing process is “an absolute nightmare” (his words, not mine).

I had this client who did social media marketing, let’s call her Jenny. She was making around $8,000 monthly for a little over a year as a solo entrepreneur but she knew she could make even more money in her business. So you know what she did, right? cue the drumroll ... Launched a group coaching program of course, to triple her revenue while working less hours. And lived happily ever after… not!

On the contrary, it was the worst possible timing. She launched it to her email list in the middle of December when everyone was so focused on holiday parties, food, vibes, et. al. No one signed up. Not even in the new year. In fact, because she stopped marketing her usual services, some of her repeat clients ended up working with other social media marketers.
