Our story began more than 40 years ago when the Hahn family started exploring the exciting potential for Bordeaux varieties in the hills of Monterey County.

We soon began sourcing grapes from vineyards of like-minded growers in the warmer pockets of California’s Central Coast. Today, we work with the best grapes from five distinct appellations (Arroyo Seco, Paso Robles, San Antonio Valley, Hames Valley & San Benito County) to produce robust yet elegant red wines. We are proud of this collaboration and grateful for their partnership.

Ever wondered how Smith & Hook Winemaker Megan Conatser got into wine? Here’s the story of how it happened, as told to Authority Magazine:

”It was really when I went to Cal Poly and was immersed in the agriculture industry that led me to it. The Central Coast is surrounded with it. Originally, I wanted to be in education and to be a counselor. I’m passionate about people and want to help people.

When I was in college the education industry took a hard hit and it was uncertain at the time, so I looked around and sought out an industry with more stability. At that time, my brother was in the wine program at Cal Poly working for Gallo and he was putting in a vineyard at our parents’ house for his senior project. Vineyards were going in everywhere it seemed, and I really enjoyed drinking wine. I took the dive into Cal Poly’s wine program and the rest is history.”
