📣📣📣Southaven is expanding its leisure and entertainment district to include Top of the Sipp, creating a larger walkable area connecting restaurants, businesses and entertainment venues near Silo Square and Snowden Grove.
The designation allows patrons to carry alcoholic beverages in approved “go-cups” purchased from participating businesses within the district’s boundaries.
Top of the Sipp is a 16-acre mixed-use development along Snowden Lane. Current businesses include Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux, Suite Serenity, Abbikadabbi’s Baking Company and Bangers Pickleball.
City Attorney Nick Manley told the Board of Aldermen at its Aug. 18 meeting that the district will extend from Top of the Sipp toward Mesquite Chop House and around BankPlus Amphitheater, though the amphitheater itself will not be included.
“It’s the exact same thing we did in Silo,” Manley said.
Mayor Darren Musselwhite said the entertainment district at Silo Square has worked as the city envisioned, and continued development in the area created a need to expand it.
Musselwhite said he once envisioned the area as a “Snowden Square,” similar to Overton Square in Memphis, with restaurants and entertainment within walking distance.
“It has been a success, everything we envisioned an entertainment district to be, it has become that,” Musselwhite said. “It will be full of entertainment venues, restaurants, and a walkable community tied in with (Snowden Grove) park.”
Alderman Charlie Hoots asked whether a future Board could change or revoke the designation if problems arose involving open containers.
Musselwhite said future city leaders would have that authority if necessary.
“You are the governing body of the City of Southaven,” Musselwhite said. “If there is something that a future Board sees as a problem, you can.”
Musselwhite said the overall goal is to encourage entertainment and give businesses another way to market themselves as part of a special district.
“It can add a lot of value to the individual establishments,” Musselwhite said.
