This month, we’re proud to recognize Wild Virginia, a valued conservation partner working to protect Virginia’s wildlife, clean water, and connected habitats.

Wild Virginia leads the 𝗩𝗶𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲, a statewide partnership of which Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy is a proud member. Together, we’re advancing research and action to improve habitat connectivity and wildlife crossings across Virginia.

This year, Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy joined Wild Virginia and other conservation partners in advocating for the creation of 𝗩𝗶𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗮’𝘀 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱. Virginians can now support wildlife corridor projects through voluntary donations when completing DMV transactions.

Wild Virginia also hosts educational webinars on important conservation topics throughout the year.

At our recent 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙙! 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙩! 𝙂𝙧𝙤𝙬! 𝘽𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝘾𝙡𝙪𝙗, readers explored 𝐶𝑟𝑜𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑠: 𝐻𝑜𝑤 𝑅𝑜𝑎𝑑 𝐸𝑐𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑦 𝑖𝑠 𝑆ℎ𝑎𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐹𝑢𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑂𝑢𝑟 𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑒𝑡 by Ben Goldfarb. Together, they discussed how roads affect wildlife, habitat connectivity, and even our own everyday driving habits.

🦋 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄?
Virginia is home to more than 170 butterfly species, from tiny skippers to striking swallowtails! 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 is a wonderful opportunity to discover how many species can be found within our local count area.

On 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝘀𝘁, volunteers will explore a designated 15-mile-diameter count circle centered in Waterford. Spanning approximately 174 square miles in the northwestern quadrant of Loudoun County, the count circle includes an incredible variety of habitats.

Teams may scout natural areas, backyard habitats, roadside ditches, cow pastures, monarch way stations, and other locations where butterflies may be found.

The information collected helps us better understand local butterfly populations and is shared with the North American Butterfly Association (NABA), contributing to butterfly conservation across the continent.

No experience is necessary. Beginners are paired with experienced butterfly enthusiasts, making the count fun, educational, and welcoming for all experience levels.

Choose a half day or full day, enjoy a peaceful summer day outdoors, and help document the butterflies living within our count circle.
