Who here appreciates the guardrails of life?

I haven’t always, but I sure do now.

Example…

This past weekend, somehow my wife stumbled across a red Toyota Supra online.

Here’s how the conversation went:

Michelle: This one’s pretty nice, I like it in red.

Me: What, a Toyota Supra?

Michelle: Yeah, I guess so.

Me: Wait, you like the Supra? You always say the yellow one in town looks stupid!

Michelle: Well I think the red one looks nice.

Me: So you’d be good with me getting a red one?

Michelle: Sure, when we get to a point where we can afford it.

And this is precisely the moment where, unbeknownst to her, my brain was trying to figure out how to afford one RIGHT NOW.

I’m really good at finding a way to make something happen when I’m dead set on making it happen.

It’s one of my toxic traits.

Which is why I don’t just require, I now genuinely need and appreciate the guardrails of life.

In this situation, the self-imposed guardrail of living life the Ramsey Solutions baby steps way kept me from blowing up my personal finances AND introducing a martial challenge.

This financial guardrail forces me to:

- Say no to consumer debt

- Have (and stick to) an every dollar budget

- Live like no one else, so later we can live (and give) like no one else

Living this way means NOT taking on a loan for a Toyota Supra, and instead waiting for a future date when I can buy a Toyota Supra outright.

And knowing me when that time comes, I’ll be interested in a completely different car.

Guardrails do not limit our freedom (as some have been convinced to believe).

They PROVIDE freedom to live life in a manner that sets us up for the best life possible.

Disregarding guardrails will send your careening off the cliffs of life.

(At which I’m an expert at)

Respecting guardrails will keep you pointed in the direction, the direction that gets you to your desired destination.

So here’s the question: do you consistently disregard your own financial guardrails?

We hope everyone had an amazing holiday!

Remember that you don't need that air fryer because your convection oven does the same thing. It also, generally, costs less to operate the oven.

Is there a "5th wall" of budgeting?

A pentagon, if you will?

I'd argue that in 2024, there most certainly is.

Traditionally the 4 walls of budgeting are:

➡️ Shelter
➡️ Food
➡️ Utilities
➡️ Transportation

But I'd argue that healthcare should be considered your 5th wall of budgeting.

During a time when healthcare is readily available, vital, yet extremely expensive, an independent line item on your budget isn't enough.

And for many, just factoring it into your emergency fund is also short-sighted.

Healthcare is a complex, confusing, and expensive beast.

Done right, it can protect your health and your finances.

Done wrong, you could find yourself sick, injured and financially compromised.

Coaching IS NOT simply doing the obvious thing for someone. (Like building out a budget)

Coaching IS about helping someone discover the seemingly obvious solution for themselves.

Example:

Have you ever googled a solution, applied it to your life, and it yielded positive results?

Of course, we all have.

On the other hand have you ever googled a solution, thought it sounded nice, but then took no action and life stayed the same?

Yes, we ALL have, which is why coaching exists.

There are INFINITE free (and valid) solutions available online. But they’re only as valuable as the effectiveness to which we apply the fix.

Two different people can read the same weight loss advice, but one loses 25lbs and the other gains 5.

Was the solution only applicable to the one who lost 25lbs?

Chances are, no, it was viable for both. The one who gained 5lbs just didn’t follow through with the guidance.

This is where coaching steps in.

Since life changes are heavily rooted in the behavioral and emotional, a coach will be the guide you need to:

➡️ Uncover what YOU specifically need

➡️ Understand what causes you to act in certain ways

➡️ Put a plan in place to get you to where you want to go

➡️ Hold you accountable to working the process that will get you to your goals

A fantastic resume can be like having the keys to a supercar with a manual transmission.

If you don't know how to drive a manual...

It's pretty worthless.

Your resume can look wonderful.

It can be well formatted.

It can check off all the "ATS" boxes.
