🚜 SDRP Round 2 Update: Additional Payments Coming for Farmers 🌾

The USDA has announced a second Supplemental Disaster Relief Program (SDRP) payment for producers with approved applications tied to eligible 2023–2024 disaster losses.

💰 Payment factor increased from 35% to 70%
📈 Eligible producers will receive an additional 35% payment
📅 Application deadline extended to August 12, 2026
📍 Applies to both Stage 1 and Stage 2 SDRP

This update means stronger financial support for farmers recovering from weather-related losses such as drought, floods, hurricanes, and other qualifying disasters. ()

🌽📊 USDA March 31 Planting Intentions + Grain Stocks — What it means on the farm

Planting intentions (2026):
• Corn: 95.3M acres (↓ 3% from last year)
• Soybeans: 84.7M acres (↑ 4%)
• Wheat: 43.8M acres (↓ 3%)

➡️ Takeaway: nationwide shift away from corn and wheat toward soybeans again this spring.

Grain stocks as of March 1:
• Corn: 9.02B bu (↑ 11% vs last year)
• Soybeans: 2.10B bu (↑ 10%)
• Wheat: 1.30B bu (↑ 5%)

➡️ Takeaway: still plenty of grain in storage across the system.

What this likely means locally:
• Corn acres tightening some nationwide, but still large overall supply
• Bean acres expanding again
• Big on-farm stocks show many producers are still holding grain
• Weather + June acreage report will matter more from here

🧭 1) Lock in supply FIRST, price second
Availability may become a bigger problem than cost.
Dealers may ration tons, Imports are disrupted, Spring demand is peaking
Up to 40% cost increases and actual shortages are already being reported in the U.S.

⚖️ 2) Don’t cut nitrogen blindly
Reducing N to “save money” can cost more in yield loss.
Nitrogen shortages threaten yields because it’s the most yield-limiting nutrient.
Better approach: optimize, not slash.
✔ Soil test + realistic yield goal
✔ Account for residual N
✔ Use variable-rate if possible
✔ Time applications to reduce losses

💧 3) Split applications to stretch supply
Especially effective in NC’s sandy Coastal Plain soils.
Instead of one heavy shot:
➡️ Preplant + sidedress
➡️ Apply closer to peak uptake
➡️ Reduce leaching risk
This improves efficiency and may allow slightly lower total N without yield loss.

🧪 4) Use stabilizers or enhanced-efficiency products
If N is expensive, protect every pound.
These help prevent:
Volatilization
Leaching
Denitrification
Higher cost per ton — but cheaper than losing N you already paid for.

🌱 5) Consider crop adjustments (if still possible)
Some growers nationwide are shifting away from high-N crops.
Legumes need far less synthetic nitrogen because they fix atmospheric N.
In Eastern NC context:
Soybeans = lowest N requirement
Peanuts = moderate (but Ca/K heavy)
Corn/Tobacco = high N

📦 6) Secure logistics early
Even if fertilizer exists, it may not arrive on time. The war disrupted shipping through a route carrying about one-third of global fertilizer trade.
Expect:
Delivery delays
Trucking shortages
Terminal bottlenecks
