“I think my clock is wound too tight.”
We hear that a lot. Many people think that when they wind their clock fully and it won’t run, they’ve caused the problem due to overwinding. However, a spring driven clock can only be wound so far without obvious damage. The spring will break, or even the key. You can snap the winding arbor with too much force. Ouch! If you did any of those things, it would be painfully obvious! Here’s the likely problem:
Over time, the clock gathers dirt and dust inside and out, and the oil on the movement thickens up, becoming gummy. Then when the mainspring is fully wound, the coils stick together and will not allow the spring to release. The movement definitely needs cleaning. Depending on the amount of wear, it may also need bushings or other repair. This cannot be determined until the movement is disassembled and inspected.
