Nobody handed me a network.
I had to build one from scratch.
When you grow up without family connections, without a cousin who knows the hiring manager, or a parent who went to the same school as your boss, networking can feel like a game designed for someone else.
I felt that way too.
New country. New city. New system.
And that quiet, heavy feeling that everyone else already knew the rules.
Here is what I wish someone had told me at the start:
You are not behind. You started from a different line.
Some people are born into networks. Others build them. Your path is different, not less.
One thoughtful message beats ten copy-paste DMs.
Be specific. Be human. Reference something real.
Events are for follow-ups, not collecting business cards.
One real connection can change everything.
Your story is an asset, not a liability.
Being first-gen, Latino, international, or a career switcher gives you perspective that matters.
Track your outreach. Do not wait to feel confident.
Confidence comes after action, not before.
If you did not inherit a network, you are not behind.
You are building something no one can take from you.
What is one thing you wish someone had told you about networking at the start of your career?
