'Tis the season for gratitude. It's nearly Thanksgiving day here in the U.S. and I'm seeing lots of posts and references to having an 'Attitude of Gratitude.' If you spent the fall with us working through the book The Gifts of Imperfection, Dr. Brené Brown, then you know it's not an attitude but a PRACTICE that we need to feel grateful.
Gratitude and Joy build our reserves for when things are hard. If we live in scarcity and fear then when things are hard, we have nothing to pull from. When we PRACTICE gratitude and joy we have a well to draw from when things are hard.
It's the perfect week to begin to build your gratitude practice. Will you join us in listing 3 things at the beginning of the day you are grateful for (can even be waking up, a deep breath, etc.) and 3 more things at night before bed.
When you get in the habit of recognizing the good in your world you will see more of it. You will more easily see the joy. This can be especially helpful as we enter in to the full holiday season when stress can loom. Many will visit with family members who have different beliefs or politics, stress over the perfect gifts, food, or finances. Starting now and building up your gratitude practice will give you the foundation to be resilient through the stresses that pop up in the next few weeks.
This works at work too! You can jot down three things you are grateful for at the start and end of your day. Try it for a few weeks and see how you feel. Let us know if anything changes.
