Are you a manager or leader in an organization? Do you want to bring out the best in your staff and tap into their natural talent to propel each of your and organization forward?
As a leader, our number one priority should be to effectively coach our employees and/or the individuals we believe in. This is harder than it seems, though, because it requires establishing and nurturing a strong relationship, individualization, and collaboration.
If you desire to successfully coach others, it is important you take the time to plan for this experience properly and create the space for them to grow in a psychologically safe environment. You need to understand why you want to coach this person, what the goals or outcomes you want to achieve, and how the experience furthers their own development goals. If done correctly, your company or organization can finally move past the stigma of the "uncoachables" and tap into the full talent and potential of your employees.
So, what are the steps to coach effectively?
1. It is crucial that before you start, you build a positive relationship with the individual and maintain it throughout the coaching process. Go into it showing the individual you care about their success, refrain from giving advice or advocating for your position, and make sure you effectively listen.
2. Understand that each individual is different, requires a different approach, and be willing to adapt. Before going into the meeting, effectively assess their role, their needs, their success factors, and their key challenges. If you use the wrong approach, it could damage the relationship.
3. In the meetings, when creating the SMART goal or plan, co-create it together. Ask questions until you get clear tactics and strategies, but make sure you collaborate to come up with it together. This ensures the individual takes ownership of it and takes action to implement the plan in step 4.
4. After the plan is created, agree to take action and eliminate any areas of confusion. Focus on the small wins, implementation, and encourage experimentation along the way, while providing your support as needed.
5. Consistently check-in and see how it is going. Create space to review progress, evaluate actions taken, adapt as needed, and reinforce responsibility.
I cannot wait to see what you accomplish together!
