This week ties together two things that look unrelated: how quickly new staff get trained, and how quickly a child answers a math problem.

In both cases, speed gets treated as evidence of readiness, when it is really just evidence that something happened fast. A new teacher who finished onboarding on schedule is not the same as a new teacher with real instructional judgment. A child who answers quickly is not the same as a child who actually understands the math underneath the answer. Building the real thing, adult expertise or a child's mathematical reasoning, takes longer than covering the material once, and there is no shortcut that skips the time.

The full piece on the second version of this is out now. Link in the comments.

New on the blog: Why School Culture Fails Black Students Despite High Expectations — a close look at how clear rules and high expectations can still erode trust in schools serving Black students, and what leaders can do differently. Ask most school leaders what a strong culture looks like, and the answer often comes quickly: high expectations, consistent consequences, no exceptions. That answer is not wrong. Young people need clear boundaries. Adults need shared norms. Schools fall apart when every classroom works by a different...

If you're a parent of a young child (birth through 3rd grade) and reading or math feels like a daily struggle, this might help.

I put together a free, no-pressure self-assessment: 10 honest questions about your daily routines, not about your child's ability or your effort as a parent. Most of the time, a stuck pattern is a sign of a fixable routine, not a bigger problem.
