I always appreciate opportunities to learn from the experiences of other women leaders. Yesterday was one of those moments.

I had the pleasure of attending the International Women’s Day “Engage in Trade” event hosted by the World Trade Center St. Louis. The program brought together a panel of inspiring women. The panel included Susan Dealis Gobbo, Iryna Dodds, and Schneidine Louis who shared their global journeys, professional experiences, and perspectives on working across cultures and international markets.

Their stories were thoughtful, honest, and a reminder of how women continue to shape business, communities, and global connections in meaningful ways.

Honored to be invited to serve as a judge for the Coro Fellows Program in Public Affairs at University of Missouri St. Louis (UMSL).

The invitation came from Tonjala Eaton, a former Coro Fellow who was placed in my office over 20 years ago during my time with Old North St. Louis Restoration Group.

Today, Tonjala is a freelance career coach and academic advisor who has helped more than 7,000 individuals pursue their educational and career goals.

Tonjala remains connected to the St. Louis program even while living in another state. To know that her Coro experience left a lasting impression means a lot to me, and it speaks to the power of mentorship and public service.

Thanks for thinking about me Tonjala. I feel grateful for the opportunity to give back.

Suburban Journal North Building Redevelopment

Had our bi-monthly team meeting today on a new project for my business. It's the conversion of the former Suburban Journal North newspaper building, and that entire Plaza in North St. Louis County. More to come to about the project in a future post.

It's a very exciting time for the project owner and developer, the nonprofit named A Red Circle. They're my new client and I'm thrilled to have my business consulting on the project.

Here are the two architects leading the renovation design of the buildings; mostly interior work. And guess what? The architects are Jayhawks; alumni of my alma mater, the University of Kansas School of Architecture.

Rock Chalk! I love when I get to collaborate with KU Jayhawks on projects on this side of the state ❤️💙❤️💙

Glad to join them and all on the redevelopment of an important building
in North St. Louis County.

BJC Healthcare session titled, Managing Beyond the Contract, offered valuable insight into understanding construction contract documents during their well attended session at the BJC Learning Institute in St Louis. Topics included understanding scope, schedule, payment terms, change orders and flow down provisions.

Thank you Marvin L. Johnson and Aaron Weishaar for educating those of us in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry as design and construction contracts & projects have become more legally complicated.

The first annual Diversity and Inclusion Summit hosted by the AGC MO (Associated General Contractors) St Louis Chapter brought together industry leaders, business owners, and diversity advocates for a powerful day of conversations and action! with a keynote address, panel discussions, and valuable networking opportunities, this event emphasizing importance of partnerships, innovation, and long-term commitment to DEI in construction and beyond.

AGC MO Chapter President, Len Toenjes, made it clear: "We are not changing anything. We will continue to do what we have been doing as related to diversity and inclusion efforts."
Wow! In the midst of national challenges to DEI initiatives and jobs, this is a bold stance that speaks volumes.

Meet Seth. He's a student at Mizzou, soon to graduate in May '25. He's one of the six students from last semester who participated on my Team IJay for their semester long project related to housing for homeless veterans.

Seth is a go-getter and very motivated. He called me the moment their semester-long project ended to inquire about an opportunity to work part-time with my business during his school breaks and after graduation. Well, here we are last week on day one of a new inspections project for my business.

Welcome aboard Seth. Your energy and drive tells me you have a great future ahead of you. 🙂

Thank you to my team, the University of Missouri (Mizzou) students in the Trulaske Edge business development program in Fall 2024. This past semester you were tasked with researching homelessness in St. Louis and Columbia, MO and identifying those agencies that are addressing housing for homeless veterans. The final goal was to assist me, the business owner, in identifying a hybrid business model to address this issue through a non-profit for-profit partnership. You conducted research, site visits and engaged in client discussions with me.
Because of each you were so engaged, I looked forward to our regular virtual meetings during the semester long engagement. Your executive summary was on point with comments about the Veterans Community Project of St. Louis and other agencies addressing housing for the unhoused.

I wish each of you could be assigned to my team, "Team IJay", for the Spring 2025 semester. You did good Cameran Stinson, Abigail Reichensperger, Ellyn Schwartz, Gannon Huber, Seth Adams and Brandon Parker.

Shockey Consulting Services provides provide award-winning management, planning and public participation services to federal, regional, state and local governments from their offices in the Kansas City and St. Louis regions.

Also, thanks Sheila, for the unexpected Part 2 of my Friday night when you invited me to join you at the Arts On Fire Celebration at the InterUrban ArtHouse. I especially enjoyed the energy, the art, good food & entertainment and the time spent with you and your friends. And we know, the work of our businesses will still be there on Monday morning :)

Opportunity Meets Preparation
It was a last-minute email after business hours on August 15th. Then an online application for a business development opportunity due the same night. And now I have I have a team of seven students working on a business development idea with my business, IJay Enterprise, to research a hybrid business model of how my for-profit business collaborates with a non-profit organization to address housing for the unhoused. Wow! What! It all happened so fast. I've even had my first virtual meeting with my student team last week.

Excited to announce that IJay Enterprise was selected for the Trulaske Edge Project through the University of Missouri (MU) Trulaske College of Business.

Being prepared for opportunities is essential, especially as a small business owner. The moment an opportunity arises, such as the chance to participate in a wonderful program like the Trulaske Edge Project, preparation allows you to respond quickly and effectively.
