๐จThierry Henry on Lisandro Martรญnezโs comments about Manchester Unitedโs hierarchy after their 2-0 defeat to Atlรฉtico Madrid:
๐ฃ๏ธ Thierry Henry:
โListen, Iโve seen players come out after defeats and criticise their clubs, and sometimes, letโs be honest, players do that because theyโre trying to force a move away. Iโm not saying thatโs definitely what Martรญnez is doing, but weโve seen it happen before.
Iโve always believed that if you have something to say about somebody, you say it to their face. You go into the office, sit down with the manager or sporting director, and tell them exactly what you think. You donโt need to send a message through the press.
Now, Iโm not defending Manchester Unitedโs hierarchy. Their recruitment deserves criticism, and Martรญnez has every right to be frustrated. But why make these comments publicly after a 2-0 defeat? Why not address those concerns privately?
After a game, emotions are high. You might say something you regret the following morning. Perhaps he wanted to protect his coach, or perhaps he genuinely believes the hierarchy has failed the dressing room. We donโt know.
But if you have the courage to criticise the board in front of the cameras, you should have the courage to confront them privately first.
And thereโs another issue. When a player repeatedly speaks like this, the club has to ask whether heโs trying to fix the problem or create a way out.
Iโve seen players use public criticism to damage relationships with their clubs and put pressure on the hierarchy before seeking a move. Iโm not accusing Martรญnez of doing that, but United cannot ignore the possibility.
If a player has genuinely lost faith in the clubโs direction, then his future needs to be discussed. You cannot constantly question the people running the club while expecting everyone to carry on as normal.
But letโs not forget the football. United have just lost 2-0. Before turning this into a debate about the board, we must examine the playersโ performances too.
Martรญnez is a defender. His first responsibility is to help Manchester United defend. He can demand better recruitment and stronger leadership, but he must also accept criticism of his own performances.
You cannot demand accountability from the people upstairs and then make yourself untouchable.
If I were at United, Iโd want Martรญnez sitting in a room with the manager and the hierarchy, having an honest conversation without cameras or microphones. If they cannot agree on the clubโs direction, then they must make a decision about his future.
What I wouldnโt accept is a situation where every defeat creates another public war between players and the people running the club.
Manchester United are too big for that.
Say what you believe and stand by your words, but tell the people who need to hear them first.
And if you no longer believe in the club, be honest about that too.
Because at some point, this stops being about speaking your mind and becomes a question of whether you still want to be part of the club youโre criticising.โ
